We spoke with Krutika Nanavati, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, to learn about three types of inflammatory processed foods to cut out for reduced body fat over 40. Nanavati revealed that refined carbs, processed meats, and sugar-sweetened beverages are the ones to minimize.

Refined Carbohydrates

First, Nanavati tells us the link between inflammation and processed foods; she says, "Chronic, low-grade inflammation is associated with higher levels of body fat, particularly visceral fat located around the abdomen. This inflammatory condition can be triggered by multiple factors, including dietary choices. Many processed foods are rich in pro-inflammatory ingredients like saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and artificial additives. These components can disrupt gut health, activate inflammatory pathways, and trigger fat storage."

The first type of food to avoid is refined carbs such as white bread, pastries, sugary cereals, and other processed snacks.

"White bread, pastries, sugary cereals, and processed snacks with high glycemic index rapidly spike blood sugar and insulin levels, promoting fat storage and inflammation," says Nanavati.

Eliminating processed meats from your diet can be a crucial step towards reducing body fat, especially for individuals over the age of 40. Processed meats, often high in saturated fats and additives, have been associated with inflammation and an increased risk of weight gain.

"Bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and deli meats are loaded with saturated fat, sodium, and preservatives, all of which contribute to chronic inflammation and metabolic imbalances," Nanavati shares.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

These beverages, laden with added sugars, contribute to inflammation and are often associated with weight gain and increased body fat. By cutting out these inflammatory processed drinks, individuals can significantly reduce their calorie intake and mitigate the risk of developing metabolic issues.

"Soda, energy drinks, and fruit juices are packed with added sugars, leading to insulin resistance, inflammation, and visceral fat accumulation," says Nanavati.

She emphasizes that eliminating factors that trigger inflammation allows the body to decrease its inflammatory response, resulting in enhanced metabolic health and a more effective fat-burning process.

"Avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugary drinks helps stabilize blood sugar and insulin levels, preventing fat storage and promoting fat utilization. Choosing whole, unprocessed foods over processed options leads to better satiety and reduced calorie intake, contributing to calorie deficit and fat loss," Nanavati states.

Lastly, she notes that while minimizing the intake of inflammatory processed foods is important, it's vital to embrace a holistic approach for sustainable reduction of body fat for individuals over 40. This involves prioritizing whole, nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and lean protein, incorporating regular exercise, and effectively managing stress.
