Protecting your information from hackers means taking an active role in who can access your data. Mistakes happen sometimes and hackers can be very sophisticated in how they steal and collect your data. But doing the bare minimum to keep yourself safe means taking inventory on the apps that you have on your phone and knowing which to delete to keep yourself better protected.

These are the scary reasons why you should delete three different types of apps from your device to protect your information from hackers.

1. Old Apps That Aren’t Updated

When an app is old and its developer has stopped issuing updates to keep its vulnerabilities patched, these vulnerabilities can become exploited by hackers. An app should always be compatible with new security features, such as multi-factor authentication and encryption methods. Be suspicious of old, outdated apps and delete them from your phone instead of continuing to use them.

2. Apps Downloaded From Third Parties

Although it’s much easier to download third-party apps on Android than it is on iPhone, the reason to avoid them is the same across board: there’s no guarantee that they are what they claim to be. Hackers can develop apps that look legit or even mimic real apps that many people have heard of, but they can be fronts to collect your data.

3. Social Media Apps

It’s almost impossible to avoid using some form of social media these days. But here’s what you should keep in mind: these sites collect an incredible amount of data on you, including your locations, personal information, contacts, shopping habits, and more. If a social media app experiences a data breach or is hacked, your information can be stolen. Limiting the number of social media apps that you download and use can lessen your risk of this happening.
