Though still identifying as non-binary, Demi Lovato has revealed that she switched back to using she/her pronouns from using they/them—confessing she was “absolutely [exhausted]” having to constantly explain her self-identity to people.
Demi told GQ Hype Spain earlier this month that she “just got tired” of explaining the meaning behind her use of they/them pronouns, and is now accepting the use of she/her again simply to not have to deal with the process every time.
Demi Lovato Explains Switch Back To She/Her Pronouns: 'I Just Got Tired'
The "Cool For The Summer" hitmaker revealed in her GQ Hype Spain interview that she decided to simply accept others' usage of she/her pronouns in reference to her just to avoid the mental labor of having to explain her pronoun preference and reasoning. "I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting," said the singer, adding, "I just got tired. But for that very reason I know that it is important to continue spreading the word."
Demi—who still identifies as a "nonbinary queer person", as in her Pride Month celebration Instagram post—also voiced a desire for more accessible gender-neutral spaces, such as bathrooms, and for more non-gendered options on paperwork. "I face this every day," said Lovato. "For example, in public toilets. Having to access the women’s bathroom, even though I don’t completely identify with it. Or it also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents or any other where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me...I think this has to change. Hopefully with time there will be more options."

Singer Has Identified As Non-Binary Since 2021
The former Disney actress first came out as non-binary in May 2021 on an episode of her "4D with Demi Lovato" podcast. Demi said at the time, "I feel this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and still am discovering."
Though she recently discussed that she'd reverted to she/her pronouns, the "Heart Attack" singer first mentioned abandoning the use of they/them back in August 2022 on the "Sprout" podcast. "Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted 'she/her' again," she said. "But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect...Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect."

It seems Demi has been in a sharing mood as of late: the Unidentified with Demi Lovato star recently made things red-carpet-official with boyfriend Jordan Lutes earlier this year, sharing photos of the pair together for his birthday to her Instagram page.
