After 40, collagen production naturally slows down. Many women look to serums to emphasize their timeless beauty while maintaining a youthful glow.

If you’re a fan of retinol products but want to know what other collagen-boosting options are out there, we found one with plenty of skincare benefits that can be found at your local drugstore.

We spoke with board-certified dermatologists Dr. Anna Chacon, M.D. and Dr. Kemunto Mokaya, M.D. and learned all about this valuable serum you’ll want to try ASAP!

The Many Benefits of Gycolic Acid

As you know, collagen is the protein that gives your skin elasticity, firmness and plumpness. Stimulating its production is necessary for anti-aging skincare, and this can be done with the help of gycolic acid.

Gycolic acid is a collagen-boosting serum ingredient that has many skincare benefits— from smoothing fine lines and wrinkles to improving your face's tone and texture.

"Glycolic acid is my favorite ingredient that is rejuvenating with anti-aging properties other than retinol," says Chacon, who notes that it is also a "skin brightener."

"I have many skincare products that contain it including cleansers, lotions, and serums," Chacon continues. "It has never stung my skin or caused irritation in any way."

Mokaya explains that gycolic acid is part of the alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) group and is a chemical exfoliant. "[Gycolic acid] enhances the skin by helping with its complexion, pigmentation, collagen production, and reduction in the signs of aging," says Mokaya.

Overall, a gycolic acid serum is definitely worth trying— whether you're looking to hydrate dry skin or fight sun damage by fading hyperpigmentation or stimulate your skin to create more collagen!
