If you have diabetes, are pre-diabetic, or are simply trying to monitor your sugar intake in order to keep your overall health in check (because we all know that too much sugar can do some serious damage to your body), it can be difficult to enjoy dessert. After all, most sweet treats are (understandably) packed with sugar and oftentimes lead to blood sugar spikes. However, there are, in fact, a few healthy options that can help you avoid this issue.

To discover a few of the best low-sugar desserts that even people with diabetes can enjoy, we spoke to dietititan Krutika Nanavati. She told us that indulging in berries and cream, as well as almond flour cookies, can satisfy your sweet tooth without putting your health at risk. Learn more below!

1. Berries and cream

It's no secret that berries are packed with incredible health benefits. When you add some cream to the mix, you've got yourself a dessert that's equal parts tasty and healthy.

"Berries are a fantastic dessert choice for diabetics due to their low glycemic index, meaning they won't cause a significant spike in blood sugar levels," Nanavati says. "Pairing them with cream, preferably a light or sugar-free version, adds a satisfying touch of indulgence without a big dose of carbohydrates." Sounds delicious!

2. Almond flour cookies

Who says diabetics can't enjoy cookies? According to Nanavati, naturally sweetened almond flour cookies make a great alternative to their processed, sugary counterparts.

"Almond flour is a great low-carb, high-protein alternative to regular flour," she assures us. "Cookies made from almond flour, sweetened with a sugar substitute like Stevia, can satisfy a sweet tooth without causing a large spike in blood sugar. They also provide a good source of healthy fats." Our mouths are watering!
