First Netflix, now Disney! According to a recent email that was sent out to Canadian Disney+ subscribers, the streaming platform will soon start cracking down on password sharing. Say it ain’t so! Find all the details below.

Disney+ to crack down on password sharing

If you’re like many people out there, you may share a Disney+ account between several households. For example, if you moved away from home to go to college, it’s not unlikely that you still use your family account to stream your favorite Disney movies. However, our password-sharing days are now numbered.“We’re implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household,” Disney’s email said. “You may not share your subscription outside of your household.”

In addition to this announcement, the company has now added a section to their Canadian subscriber agreement, labeled “account sharing,” which states that “unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household.”

But what exactly qualifies as a “household,” anyway? According to the user agreement, your “household” refers to all of the devices used by people living at your primary personal residence. Which means that anyone who does not live under the same roof will soon have to start shelling out the money for their own account.

While Disney+ has not made it clear exactly how they'll keep track of this, CEO Bob Iger recently said that they are "actively exploring" ways to do so, warning that they have the "technical capability" to keep track of who is signing in where. They will reportedly start cracking down on November 1st.

As expected, users aren't happy about this news. "Disney you are selfish," one person posted on X (the website formerly known as Twitter). "Disney being greedy?" another wrote. "Who could have seen it coming." Someone else posted: "Disney Plus is highly overrated!" On top of recent cancelations, it seems they may lose subscribers after this.

Although this announcement pertains to Canadian users, we'd have to guess that the U.S. won't be far behind. Considering the fact that Netflix recently became strict about keeping it within the household, too, streaming is just getting more and more expensive. And all of this is also on top of Costco's recent efforts to get serious about membership-sharing. Maybe it's time to consider moving back home...
