There’s no denying that you need to prioritize protein in your diet if you want to stay healthy, especially if you want to lose weight. This critical macronutrient supports muscle growth, tissue repair, and overall bodily function. Incorporating enough protein in your diet can help control hunger, maintain muscle mass, and improve metabolism. However, not all protein sources are created equal when it comes to your health and waistline—some may even slow down your progress.
Protein powder is a highly convenient, popular source of protein. It can easily be worked into shakes for a quick pre-workout meal. However, it doesn’t come without its fair share of downsides. One doctor on TikTok, known as @pcos.thyroid.weight.loss, argues it may not be the best choice for weight loss. In fact, according to him, your daily protein shake could hinder fat loss rather than help it. Learn more about why below.
According to the doctor, “One of the worst supplements for weight loss is actually protein powder.” He explains that “protein powder doesn’t have any fiber, and usually you’re taking it in between your meals.”
The lack of fiber makes protein powder less filling, which can contribute to overeating—especially if you’re consuming sweetened powders, which could increase your cravings for detrimental sweet treats. Additionally, consuming protein powder at certain times can impact hormone levels: “You are unnecessarily spiking up your insulin, which is a hormone that stops fat loss,” he warns.
