As we age, our necks may naturally become dry, saggy, and prone to wrinkles and fine lines. To combat this, moisturizing products like neck cream can promote skin health and prevent irritation in this area, leading to a smoother appearance. Women over in their 40s and 50s may find neck creams designed specifically for nourishing their skin to be especially beneficial.
For expert advice on choosing the right cream and ingredients, we turned to skincare formulator and founder of JBK Wellness Labs, Dr. Jenelle Kim. According to Dr. Kim, incorporating the following types of sagging skin remedies into your daily routine can be helpful: choosing creams with hydrating, water-loving ingredients for mature skin, and prioritizing ingredients with protective antioxidants.
Anti-Aging Tips For Smoothing A Dry, Saggy Neck
1. Find A Hydrating, Antioxidant-Rich Neck Cream
If you struggle with dry skin that naturally becomes drier with age, Kim stresses finding a neck cream to provide moisture and relief to your neck at any age (but especially over 40). The best neck creams for this purpose, she says, "often contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, retinol, and ceramides."
"Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain moisture, keeping the skin hydrated and reducing dryness," she adds. She goes on to say that "peptides and retinol can also support collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of wrinkles."
Ceramides help strengthen the skin barrier, she notes, leading to "improved hydration" and a smoother texture. "Together, these ingredients work to soothe the skin, promote a more youthful appearance, and support graceful aging," she explains.
Some popular drugstore neck creams she recommends include CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream, Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream and Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Moisturizer.
Of course, she points out that a visit to your dermatologist or skincare expert will help you choose the right product for your skin's needs.
Ultimately, creams like these are important to include in your skincare routine if you want a smoother, more lifted-looking neck, she says.
These creams can "promote a smoother look over time," she adds while also "moisturizing, firming the skin, and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."
2. Apply Once Or Twice Daily
For optimal results, Kim suggests wearing a neck cream 365 days a year. "The frequency of application can vary depending on the product and individual needs," she acknowledges, adding that a general guideline to remember is that "neck creams are typically applied once or twice daily, following the instructions on the product packaging."
She also notes that it's important to "avoid excessive stretching or tugging of the skin while applying skincare products or during massages."
Another pro tip she tells us is that "practicing good posture" throughout the day and when applying your skincare products can also "minimize the development of neck lines and wrinkles."
3. Never Forget Sunscreen On Your Neck
While skin on your neck will naturally sag with age, you could be inadvertently speeding up the aging process by not applying sunscreen to your neck and face every day, Kim warns.
"Protect your neck from sun damage by applying sunscreen with broad-spectrum SPF daily," she stresses. Whether you want to find a neck cream with SPF or apply that after your cream, it's vital to never skip this step if you want to smooth out wrinkles and delay the creation of more.
Kim also recommends "considering incorporating gentle neck exercises and massages into your routine to promote blood circulation and muscle tone."
Lastly, while also revamping your skincare routine, Kim advises that you should always "stay well-hydrated, maintain a balanced diet, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these lifestyle factors can impact skin health."
