Brad Pitt‘s latest GQ cover story revealed several unexpected takeaways, including that the Hollywood icon suffers from the neurological disorder, prosopagnosia, and that he fully quit smoking during the pandemic. The Once Upon A Time In Hollywood actor, 58, also explained that he had to go full cold turkey rather than gradually eliminating cigarettes from his life.
“I don’t have that ability to do just one or two a day,” he said in the interview, “It’s not in my makeup. I’m all in. And I’m going to drive into the ground. I’ve lost my privileges.” Writer Otessa Moshfegh also revealed that when interviewing the Oscar winner that he offered her a nicotine mint and as she wrote, “he chews them mindlessly.”
In addition, the publication indicated that cutting out smoking from his life is only “one of several radical changes” that he’s made to his health over the past few years. Readers also learned that after his ex Angelina Jolie filed for divorce, he strived to get sober in 2016 and spent one year and a half attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
He said, “I had a really cool men’s group here that was really private and selective, so it was safe.” Pitt continued, “Because I’d seen things of other people who had been recorded while they were spilling their guts, and that’s just atrocious to me.”
Ever since his split from Jolie, Pitt noted that he is now sober and hasn’t had a drink in 6 years. Fans on Twitter reacted to the profile after it went viral, and commended the Ocean’s Eleven alum for being “so honest,” “brave” and “inspiring” through sharing his story.
Pitt also told GQ (and sent the internet in a frenzy in the process) that he plans to retire soon after an impressive 30-year acting career. Pitt emphasized that he is currently thinking through what he wants the final stages of his career to be like. “I consider myself on my last leg, this last semester or trimester,” he said, “What is this section gonna be? And how do I wanna design that?” Pitt shared.
The 12 Years A Slave star is currently garnering buzz and acclaim for his upcoming performance in Bullet Train, directed by David Leitch. The feel-good action flick is set for an August 5th release, and a project that Pitt feels excited about. “In the conversations I had with Brad, the number one goal was to make a movie that’s entertaining and escapist and fresh and original, that will make people want to come back to the theater,” Leitch notably said.
