After a clip of Trump and Obama's exchange was uploaded to TikTok, one user wrote: "oh look we're the ones divided...these two seem pretty chill together." Another added: "At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re all actually good friends off camera." Someone else commented: "I appreciate that Obama and trump can get along." One other noted: "isn’t it wild that politics has us so divided and yet they’re sitting there laughing together."

In a conversation with NBC News at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after the funeral, Trump said that he "didn’t realize how friendly" his moment with Obama looked. "I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do," he shared. Trump avoided going into the details of the conversation. During the memorial service for former President Carter, Vice President Kamala Harris, seated ahead of them, seemed to let out a sigh upon noticing Trump and Obama laughing together.  

Forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman shared with The New York Post this week that they might have been cautious about the cameras directed at them as they sat closely together, aiming to seem friendly. Freeman suggested that their conversation could have been about global treaties. The playful exchange between Trump and Obama followed years of what many have viewed as a strained relationship.

Carter made his final journey back to Georgia on Thursday, following the state funeral in Washington where President Joe Biden delivered a tribute. The nation's 39th president will be laid to rest in his cherished hometown of Plains, beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023.
