As with most elections, a large majority of the working class votes for the Democratic candidate, and in the context of this year’s presidential election, that’s a lot of votes for Joe Biden. However, Donald Trump has some ideas of his own on how to win over some of those blue collar votes: end taxes on tips. While this sounds great to anyone that works a job that earns tips, many Republican senators aren’t pleased with Trump’s new policy idea. Keep reading for more information.

Donald Trump Wants To End Taxes On Tips

Last week, Trump had a private meeting with Senate Republicans, and it's come out that he proposed a new idea, one that's made him pretty popular with the caddies at his golf course near Mar-a-Lago. The 78-year-old wants to allow 100% of tips to go to the earner, rather than a small percentage going to taxes.

This idea would certainly make him very popular with many members of the working class, many of whom make more of their money from tips rather than their salary. It would also help Trump a great deal in terms of winning over voters from swing states with large service industries, like Nevada, Arizona, and Georgia.

Republicans Are Skeptical Of Donald Trump's New Idea

While anyone who's ever been a waiter or waitress would certainly be cheering for this idea, some House Republicans who mostly likely have never fallen into this category are already shooting it down. Representative Chip Roy from Texas said, "I don't know about  just making a unilateral decision about tips versus focusing on workers generally. Like, why would you favor tip-earners versus another person who makes similar wages? ... That might even pose some legal questions in terms of how you're treating one person versus another."

Representative Vern Buchanan from Florida agreed, and also brought up the issue of the climbing national debt. "You've just got to be careful with it," he said. "We're running these trillion-dollar deficits. ... I want to be sensitive, because they work hard. And obviously a big part of their earnings is tips. All these programs sound good; everybody likes to pay less taxes. But we got to pay the bills."

Hopefully, this becomes one of the policy ideas Trump acts on if he is elected to the presidency this fall, and not just one he talks about to win over voters. Only time will tell.
