As we get closer and closer to this year’s election, it’s time for Donald Trump to make some pretty big decisions—that’s right, it’s time to choose his running mate. Four men have all been asked to submit background information to the Trump campaign, according to two Trump insiders, meaning the search has been narrowed. Donald Trump’s vice president hopeful will be one of these four men: Doug Burgum, Marco Rubio, JD Vance, or Tim Scott. Keep reading for a little four background on each of Trump’s potential right hand men.
Tim Scott: Republican Senator of South Carolina
Tim Scott is a Republican Senator of South Carolina. He assumed this position on January 3, 2023, but he isn't a stranger to politics. He served on the Charleston County Council from 1995 to 2009, then served in the South Carolina General Assembly from 2009 to 2001, and represented South Carolina's 1st congressional district in the US House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013.
Scott wasn't a fan of Donald Trump back in the day either. In 2017, Scott spoke on Trump's handling of the white nationalist rally and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, slamming the then-president for drawing an equivalence between the protesters and counter-protesters and saying there was “no question” Trump “compromised” his “moral authority.”
Doug Burgum: Governor of North Dakota
Doug Burgum has been the Governor of North Dakota since 2016. He actually worked in software for a while, growing Great Plains into a successful software company and selling it to Microsoft in 2001 for over a billion dollars. He attempted to run for president this year, but ended his campaign in December 2023 and joined the Trump campaign, advising on the energy policy.
However, Burgum can't claim innocence either. Though he didn't necessarily bad-mouth the former president, he told NBC's Chuck Todd just last year that he wouldn't want to get into business with Trump. Todd asked him, "You just wouldn't do business with him?" and Burgum responded, "No, I wouldn't." You can't really get more in business with Trump than being his Vice President!
Marco Rubio: Senator of Florida
Lastly, Marco Rubio has been a Senator representing the state of Florida since 2011. He attempted to run against Donald Trump for president in 2016, but ended up dropping out and endorsing him. However, Rubio was also a Trump-hater at one point, calling him "reckless and dangerous" and warned that he thought he would "do damage to America." He also called supporting for Donald Trump "a trap." We're wondering if he somehow fell into this trap he was worried about...
