Scented lotions seem great--not only do they hydrate your skin, but they double as a perfume and are sure to get you compliments all day long. However, according to board-certified dermatologist and Chief Medical Officer at Sanova Dermatology, Dr. Ted Lain, those with sensitive skin should steer clear. He explains, “I would recommend avoiding scented lotions as the fragrance may cause those with sensitive skin to react, and worsen existing skin issues on otherwise healthy skin.”
If you struggle with dry skin or even eczema in the colder months, scented lotion can actually further aggravate the problem, making it difficult for your skin to heal. Dr. Lain says, “Fragrance is the primary offender in scented lotion. It is a well-known sensitizer, meaning that it commonly causes either an allergic reaction or an irritant reaction. These are difficult to distinguish, since both appear as redness, itching and swelling.”
Wondering if you’re allergic to your scented lotion or just having an irritant reaction? Dr. Lain explains that while an allergic reaction will develop quickly, after your first or second use of the lotion, an irritant reaction will develop over time. Either way, you’ll know if your skin isn’t happy with you, and it’s best to avoid if you know you’re prone to skin irritation.
While less exciting, Dr. Lain suggests adding a plain, unscented lotion into your post-shower routine. Although it may not make you smell like a pine tree or a fresh baked cookie, an unscented lotion with ceramides will replenish your skin’s barrier naturally, leaving you feeling moisturized and ready to take on the winter without itchy, uncomfortable skin.
