Drew Barrymore is great at getting her talk show guests to really open up to her; and she’s also no stranger to opening up about her own life too! She once again got very real with her fans on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, this time in reference to her “devastating” divorce which took place almost ten years ago,

The Charlie’s Angels alum divorced Will Kopelman, with whom she shares daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, back in 2016 after four years of marriage. And although she seems to be in a good place now, with the pair having an amicable co-parenting relationship, she told the audience that it was something that took her a long time to recover from.

Drew Barrymore Opens Up About Her Divorce On Her Talk Show

During a conversation with Moon Unit Zappa on the March 21st episode of the show, the 50-year-old Santa Clarita Diet actress reflected on the emotional toll of her divorce from the art director, particularly how it disrupted the “traditional” family structure she had envisioned and hoped for.

“Everything to me was very devastating,” the 50 First Dates actress confessed. “It took me a long time to recover from it,” she continued, adding: “It wasn’t the traditional family dynamic that I swore I would do for my family because I did not grow up that way.”

Having been emancipated from her parents at just 14 years old, the E.T. star explained how her unconventional upbringing fueled her desire for a traditional family of her own.

She explained: "It's weird stuff like that. It's soup when you're sick. I remember all the kids at school would go into the office to call their parents when they were sick and I could never get a hold of anybody. And I was so jealous of those kids who would call and be like, 'Mom, Dad, come pick me up.' I just would sit there and be like, 'What's that like?'"

The Music and Lyrics actress echoed this on an episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this year, saying: "If you don't grow up in a perfect way with a perfect family, you fear the blueprint and you go, 'I want to do things differently.'"

What Else Has Drew Barrymore Said About Her Divorce?

Back in 2022, the Blended star shared how the divorce had affected her family in a candid interview with AARP The Magazine, calling it a "heavy" and "painful" time of her life. She confessed at the time: "My dream family was falling apart and I didn't know how to put one foot in front of the other."

"I had grown up so fast but now I didn't know what age to feel – I just knew that my life was heavy, and painful and sad – and I sat in that for a while," she added.
