The combination of water with lemon and honey has gained popularity for its potential to contribute to many things such as a flatter belly and overall well-being. Proponents of this morning ritual claim that besides detoxification, the mixture’s unique properties such as the digestive benefits of lemon and the metabolism-boosting effects of honey, can aid in weight loss and promote a flatter stomach. But, we asked experts to look into the supposed benefits of regularly drinking water with lemon and honey each morning, examining whether it lives up to the claims of supporting a flatter belly and offering insights into its potential impact on one’s health and weight management journey.

We spoke with Krutika Nanavati, a registered dietitian and nutritionist; to find out whether these claims are supported for a flatter belly. Contrary to popular belief, she shared a surprising revelation: “while water with lemon and honey offers some potential benefits, it is not a magic bullet for weight loss or a flatter belly.” Read on to learn more.

Can Drinking Water With Lemon And Honey Every Morning Aid In A Flat Belly?

Nanavati starts off by saying that there is no direct link to drinking this liquid and weight loss. "Scientific evidence lacks strong support for lemon and honey water directly causing weight loss. While its components (vitamin C, antioxidants, fructose) might play a role in metabolism, the effects are likely minimal and overshadowed by dietary and activity habits."

The reason this beverage gains recognition for weight loss and achieving a toned abdomen might lie in its indirect association. She says that "lemon water can promote hydration, a crucial factor for overall health and metabolism. It can also act as a low-calorie alternative to sugary drinks, contributing to calorie deficit when replacing such beverages."

Regarding honey, it stands out as a healthier sweetener when compared to other sugary additives, but Nanavati warns that "the added calories from honey, especially in excessive amounts, can counteract any potential weight loss benefits. Moderation is key."

The Bottom Line

She does mention a potential benefit when it comes to your midsection while drinking this beverage: "Lemons contain pectin, a fiber that may aid digestion and reduce bloating, which can visually appear as a flatter stomach. However, addressing the underlying cause of bloating is more effective than temporary alleviation."

But, the bottom line according to Nanavati is that "neither lemon nor honey have specific fat-burning properties targeted at abdominal fat. Spot reduction is a myth in weight loss."

This doesn't mean that you should completely eliminate this beverage or exclude it entirely from your morning routine. There are indeed several other benefits that water with lemon and honey have for your overall wellbeing. Nanavati concludes by listing its other nutritional benefits: "Starting your day with water is crucial for hydration, improving energy levels, cognitive function, and digestion. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant beneficial for immune function and skin health. Some find warm lemon water aids digestion in the morning, although scientific evidence is limited."
