Beverages play a significant role in our daily lives, offering a wide array of flavors and refreshment. From classic choices like water and tea to more indulgent options such as sodas and coffee, beverages contribute to our overall hydration and enjoyment. However, it’s important to be mindful of the impact certain drinks can have on our digestive system. Some beverages, due to their composition or carbonation, may lead to gas, bloating, and indigestion.

We spoke with Krutika Nanavati, registered dietitian and nutritionist, to learn about three common beverages that can lead to gas and other symptoms like bloating and indigestion. Nanavati tells us that carbonated beverages, sugary drinks, and excessive coffee or tea are the ones to minimize.

Carbonated Drinks

While carbonated beverages can be refreshing, excessive consumption may introduce extra air into the digestive system, leading to gas and bloating. Additionally, some carbonated drinks contain artificial sweeteners or high levels of sugar, which can contribute to indigestion.

"The fizz you hear isn't just excitement, it's air getting trapped in your digestive system. Soda, seltzer, and even sparkling water can lead to uncomfortable bloating and excessive gas production. Carbonation introduces excess air into your digestive system, expanding your stomach and causing bloating," Nanavati says.

Instead, she recommends something simple like water to quench your thirst. "Plain water is the ultimate gut-friendly beverage. It aids digestion, flushes toxins, and keeps you feeling refreshed without any bloating or gas."

Sugary Drinks

Sugary drinks, encompassing a wide range from sodas to fruit-flavored beverages, can be delightful but may contribute to digestive discomfort. The high sugar content in these drinks can lead to bloating and indigestion, as the body works to process and break down the excess sugars. Some sugary drinks may contain artificial additives or sweeteners that can disrupt the digestive process and result in gas.

"Fructose, a common sweetener in juices, sports drinks, and sweetened teas, is poorly absorbed by our gut. This fermentation process releases gas, leading to bloating and discomfort. Fructose fuels intestinal bacteria, leading to gas production and bloating," Nanavati notes.

As for healthier alternatives, she recommends "infused waters with fruits, herbs, and spices like ginger, lemon, and mint because they offer refreshing flavors and potential digestive benefits."

coffee and tea

Excessive Coffee & Tea

While coffee and tea are beloved beverages enjoyed for their stimulating effects, excessive consumption can potentially lead to digestive issues such as gas, bloating, and indigestion. Both coffee and certain types of tea contain caffeine, which can act as a natural diuretic and, in excess, may lead to dehydration and disturbances in the digestive process. Additionally, the acidity in coffee can sometimes irritate the stomach lining, contributing to indigestion.

Nanavati says that "while moderate coffee and tea can have health benefits, overindulging can irritate the stomach lining and disrupt digestion. This can lead to heartburn, indigestion, and gas in sensitive individuals. Overdoing coffee and tea can inflame the stomach lining, triggering acid reflux and gas production."

Instead, she says to choose unsweetened iced teas or natural fruit juices mixed with water to reduce sugar intake and prevent potential irritation to the gut.
