Co-founder and CEO of CureSkin, Guna Kakulapati advises staying away from drugstore exfoliants that use apricot pits, walnut shells or large exfoliating agents. The reason is simple: these ingredients are too sharp for the fine, delicate skin of the face.

"While physical exfoliation is totally fine if you're using a gentle exfoliant, exfoliants using fruit pits and other jagged ingredients cause more harm than good," Guna warns.

Not only can harsh exfoliators cause microtears-which lead to sensitivity, redness and irritation-but they also leave your skin susceptible to bacteria that cause breakouts. (Who knew your nighttime cleansing regime could actually be hurting your skin more than helping it?!)

"Fragrance is the number one ingredient that causes skin irritation," Erica continues. "Many beauty manufacturers use unnecessary fragrance and/or dyes in their products because consumers respond favorably to pretty colors and smells. But what may look and smell pretty isn't necessarily good for your skin.”
