When choosing a shampoo, there are a lot of things to consider–especially if you are more susceptible to hair loss. Certain shampoos can exacerbate existing problems, leading to more noticeable hair shedding.
With that in mind, if your hair has been looking thinner lately, keep reading to learn why–and how to avoid it in the future.
One of the big issues with drugstore shampoo brands is that they have the wrong pH for haircare.
According to board-certified dermatologist Erum Ilyas, "Our hair needs an acidic pH to make it less susceptible to frizz and friction against other hair follicles that can result in breakage."
Unfortunately, not every shampoo has the correct pH.
Ilyas continues, "One study showed that 75% of salon shampoos had the right pH whereas only 38% or drugstore brands."
That's not the only thing you should keep in mind when picking out a new shampoo.
It's also a good idea to steer clear of harsh surfacants like sulfate that can damage the hair, making it more susceptible to breakage.
Ilyas explains to SheFinds, "Ingredients in shampoos that can lead to a higher risk of hair breakage and possible loss are ones that strip the hair of its natural oils, surfactants in particular. The one most hear about tends to be sodium laureth sulfate."
With that in mind, if you are hitting the drugstore for a shampoo refill, keeping this information in mind is a good idea as it can help protect your hair from unnecessary damage and keep it looking healthy and full.
