If you follow beauty trends on Tik Tok or other social media platforms, you’ve probably seen professional stylists and hair enthusiasts using a new tool— the Dyson Airwrap— to achieve glamorous curls and wavy tresses. The product, which costs approximately $549 at stores such as Sephora and Ulta, is often praised online due to it being specifically engineered to style and dry damp hair simultaneously, and the fact that it is designed for all hair types.
We checked in with professional hairstylists and experts to learn more about the functions of this tool and its increasing popularity. Read on for tips, common questions answered and reviews of the Dyson Airwrap from Lauren Udoh, Hair Creative Director of WigReports, and Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles.

How Is the Dyson Airwrap Used and Why is it Popular?
In videos across social media, users are seen curling, drying and styling their hair with the tool and it has several different parts to it with coinciding functions. The pricy Airwrap comes with the following— a pre-styling dryer, 1.2″ barrels, 1.6″ barrels, a soft smoothing brush, a firm smoothing brush, volumizing brush, storage case, filter-cleaning brush, non-slip mat and a presentation case.
“The Airwrap has multiple heat settings and tourmaline-infused ceramic barrels that help to reduce frizz and lock in moisture,” Udoh explains. “It also comes with a round volumizing brush, firm, soft smoothing brush and a styling concentrator, making it really easy to use.”

Abdullah adds that the Dyson Airwrap is popular for its ability to create “blowout curls with minimal damage” and its ability to work on different types of hair successfully. “Plus,” Abdullah says, “the little case is cute and the device and attachments themselves look pretty sleek, too. […] There’s always a sense of more expensive products working better, so we really feel like we’re treating ourselves to healthier hair that still looks great with this tool.”
Regarding the technical aspects of the Airwrap, since it uses relatively low heat, Abdullah says that you “really have to work with small sections of hair to get the right look, so that can take a while.” Also, you “do have to follow the instructions,” she stresses, and to “make sure to start with hair that’s damp, not wet, and don’t release the Airwrap until the curl is completely dry.” She notes that because the Coanda technology is “so different from direct heat tools, it takes some getting used to.“
Something else that Abdullah says she noticed as a stylist is that “the curls don’t always hold as well as you’d expect because of the low heat,” so “you kind of have to play around with styling products and hairspray” to make them last. “It’s best to use just the right airflow, so as not to exacerbate frizz for those who are already prone to it.”

So, is the Tool Worth its Price Tag?
Many hairstylists on social media praise the tool for its efficiency and ability to create effects of trendy blowouts in minutes. We asked Udoh and Abdullah if the tool (which is priced over $540 at most outlets) is worth its costly price, and what else users can expect from it based on their experience with it.
“As a hairstylist, I think the Dyson Airwrap is worth it because it’s a great tool for creating curls and waves,” Udoh says. “From my experience, the tool is worth it because it helps to reduce the amount of time I spend on a client’s hair. I can style the hair quicker and achieve the same results.” She also notes that the Airwrap “is compact and lightweight, so it’s perfect for travel.”
Abdullah adds that “this tool is really good for bringing volume to fine hair and even for straightening heads full of curls, so I would say it’s worth it.” Similar Dyson hair products continue to trend on Tik Tok, but none as much as the Airwrap, as its hashtag on the platform currently boasts over 2.1 billion views and thousands of videos.
