Ellen DeGeneres is facing serious criticism from fans after she revealed that she drank three “weed drinks” before getting behind the wheel to drive her wife, Portia de Rossi, to the hospital. DeGeneres explained the situation during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. Though DeGeneres admitted it was “probably not safe,” fans had harsher words for her decision.
"Chelsea Handler told me about these weed drinks, they’re called Cann, and they have CBD or [THC] — I don’t know what the good thing is," DeGeneres, 63, explained during the show, per Page Six. "I drank one, and I didn’t feel anything, so I drank three, and then I took two melatonin sleep pills," she said.
It was only when DeGeneres was getting ready to sleep that she realized she hadn't seen de Rossi. "And I’m laying in bed, and I realize [Portia’s] not in bed," she explained.
"She’s moaning. I get out of bed, and she’s on the ground on all fours, and I said, ‘You’re not OK.’ She goes, ‘I’m OK.’ I said, ‘No, unless you’re playing Twister by yourself, you’re not OK.’ So I rushed her to the emergency room."
At this point, Kimmel clarifies, "You drove her by yourself?”
"I did," DeGeneres responded. "I mean, I kicked in, like my adrenaline, because I just had to rush her there. It’s probably not safe."
"I shouldn’t be saying any of this," she admitted.
Fans were understandably upset by her story. One commented on Instagram, "Maybe it’s just time for Ellen to retire." Another Instagram user questioned why Ellen hadn't considered any other options, "Why didn't she call an ambulance?" they wrote.
Twitter users were just as critical. "Talk show host admits to driving under the influence of drugs smh. Should get her show banned," one wrote. Another commented on the host's abundance of privilege. "She could've killed someone. I'm so sick of her entitled a**," they added.
