The inspirational fantasy-meets-reality biopic of Sir Elton John, Rocketman, won the hearts of fans, film critics and movie-goers alike when it hit movie theaters in May of this year. The movie surpassed $100 million in its first week, and thanks to Elton’s bigger-than-life persona and over-the-top costumes (the feathers! the sequins!) it will undoubtedly be one of the year’s biggest Halloween costumes.
For anyone who hasn’t caught the movie yet, here’s what you’ve missed (sans-spoilers): Rocketman stars Taron Egerton as John, with the film covering the pop star’s meteoric rise to fame, and bumps along the way. The film opens with the now famous, costume-clad British pop star at the emotional low point of his life. John enters himself into an addiction rehab and reflects back on his life, told through his music.
If Elton John’s glamorous fashion style isn’t enough to hook you, you’ll stay fixed on the movie for the sake of his most popular hits that make their way into the script, like “Saturday Night’s Alright,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Tiny Dancer” and obviously “Rocket Man.”
If the movie spoke to you in a way that it spoke to millions of viewers, or if you’ve always been a mega-Elton John fan anyway, now is the perfect time to start thinking about a Rocketman Halloween costume.
The movie highlighted the daring fashion sense that became synonymous with the pop star’s work from early in his career. Sparkles, jumpsuits, big shoulders, flamboyant silhouettes and dazzling textures like feathers, fur or velvet were among his signature looks. Because his is such an eclectic wardrobe, you can pull pretty much anything out of your closet to put the costume together–just don’t forget his signature square sunglasses! Because Elton’s style was heavy on the accessories–outrageous hats, capes and most iconically, sunglasses–it will be a really fun costume to DIY. You can even make it last minute by raiding your friends’ closets.
The best thing about John’s style is that it isn’t gender-specific. Anyone can dress as Rocketman, so we’ve rounded up the best women’s clothing items you can buy to create an easy DIY Halloween costume.
How To DIY It
1. Feather Jacket
While it might be difficult to find a jacket with feathers on the shoulders like Taron Egerton wore in Rocketman, there’s a DIY trick that might help you. Amazon sells feather shrugs to cover just the shoulders that you can pair over a white jacket with for the perfect look.

2. Sparkle Top
Sequins must play a role in your Rocketman look. You can get the perfect shiny, sequin top for less than $14 from Walmart. Bonus: the on-trend slouchy fit will make this top an essential part of your everyday rotation.

3. Wide-Leg Pants
As for pants, the wider the better. You can go with a simple pair of white, wide-leg yoga pants for this look, or try this snazzy pair from Amazon. It has a reverse-tapered silhouette that starts fit at the waist and extends to a wide flare, amplified by an ulta-1970’s ruffle detail at the bottom.
