Essential oils are used in skincare for various reasons--including healing and preventing stretch marks aka striae gravidarum. Studies show that a majority of woman have stretch marks, often resulting from childbirth, weight gain, and puberty. If you're looking for ways to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, try a few of these essential oils that experts swear by.

sweet almond oil

Bitter Almond Oil

Bitter almond oil is different than the sweet almond oil that is often used for skincare and culinary purposes. Bitter almond oil is toxic when eaten, but when applied topically, it can help prevent stretch marks. A 2012 study found that pregnant women who massaged their bellies with bitter almond oil were less likely to develop stretch marks.

rosehip seed oil

Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip seed oil is a thick, yellowish-orange oil that's filled with components that stimulate collagen production. "In addition to softening and moisturizing the epidermis, the fatty acids in rosehip oil convert into prostaglandins once they are absorbed into your skin," Livestrong reports. "These prostaglandins help stimulate your skin's regenerative powers, working to heal scars and protect against stretch marks."

neroli

Neroli Oil

Neroli oil comes from the extract of bitter orange tree flowers. "Due to its ability to revive skin at the cellular level, neroli essential oil can be beneficial for wrinkles, scars and stretch marks," says wellness physician Dr. Josh Axe. "Any skin condition caused by or related to stress should also respond well to the use of neroli essential oil since it has wonderful overall healing and calming abilities."

argan

Argan Oil

Argan has become popular recently in hair care, but it's amazing for stretch marks and scars as well. "Argan oil can help people with mild acne as the oleic acid found in the oil helps promote healthy levels of sebum production, and its linoleic acid helps prevent excess dead skin cells by promoting healthy skin turnover," says cosmetics expert and co-founder of Bluemercury Marla Malcolm Beck.
