Eva Mendes Defends Ryan Gosling

Back when it was first announced that Ryan Gosling had landed the role of Ken in Barbie, there were quite a few critics. Now that he’s landed an Oscar nomination, those critics are eating their words, but Gosling’s wife, Eva Mendes, is not letting them forget what they said. Mendes posted screenshots from a Rolling Stone article titled, “Sorry to Be the One to Say It, but Ryan Gosling Is Giving Major Cringe as Ken in ‘Barbie'” where its author, Tomás Mier, had some pretty mean comments about Gosling’s new role.

“But on Wednesday,” the article reads, “Warner Brothers released the first look at Ryan Gosling as Ken. And it’s giving full camp, full cringe.”

“We’re already lining up therapy appointments for the nightmares this is sure going to give us,” the article continues.

La La Land homeboy looks like one of those creepy, older West Hollywood men who still think they’re in their 20s,” Mier said. “But honestly, it’s probably the blonde hair: it’s just that bad.”

Well, Mier is certainly regretting his statements now. Eva posted these screenshots with a caption cheering on her husband: “So proud of my man. So much hate when he took on this role. So many people trying to shame him for doing it. Despite all the #Notmyken ridicule and articles written about him, he created this completely original, hilarious, heartbreaking, now iconic character and took it all the way to Oscars.”

“So beyond proud to be this Ken’s Barbie,” she said.

Ryan Gosling Calls Out Academy Awards For Snubbing Margot Robbie & Greta Gerwig

While we're sure Ryan Gosling is celebrating his Oscar nomination, in true Ryan Gosling fashion, he's called out the Academy for snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, who many believe were slated to win an Oscar, but weren't even nominated.

"I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken," Gosling's statement reads.

"But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film," he continues. "No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement."

He concludes by saying, "Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees."

And Barbie did make history. It broke the record for the highest-grossing movie directed solely by a woman, earning over $1B in global ticket sales, so it's understandable why the general public is outraged over her lack of nomination.

Fans Are 'Disappointed' At Margot Robbie & Greta Gerwig Oscar Nomination Snub

And it's not just Ryan Gosling who's disappointed in the lack of nominations for Margot and Greta. Fans have taken to TikTok to share their outrage across thousands of videos and comments, claiming that Margot and Greta not receiving nominations while Ryan Gosling did is what the Barbie was all about. Others referenced Taylor Swift's hit song "The Man," in which she sings "I'm so sick of running as fast as I can / Wondering if I'd get there quicker / If I was a man /And I'm so sick of them coming at me again / 'Cause if I was a man / Then I'd be the man."

User Ashton Ray posted a TikTok sharing his feelings, saying, "This one's not sitting right in my stomach. What do you mean the two women that were the foundation of the most successful movie of 2023 weren't nominated for Oscars?"

Hundreds of users agreed with his sentiment, leaving comments sharing their thoughts: "I was so disappointed until you said Ryan Gosling was nominated and then my disappointment just turned into rage," one user wrote.

"I find it funny that what's happening now with the nominations and the speech at the Golden Globes is literally showing why the Barbie movie was made," another user pointed out.

"I am ENRAGED!" another user exclaimed.

"In the year of the Barbie movie?" a final fan asked.
