Gray hair that comes with aging is not only inevitable, but also naturally stunning. However, many women may not feel fully ready to show it off yet and if concealing it in a clever and simple way helps you feel beautiful and more confident, we reached out to hairstylists and hair experts for a favorite, trusty tip when styling any silvery tresses. Read on for helpful suggestions and input from Ghanima Abdullah, hairstylist and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles and Maria Fontana, professional hairstylist and CEO of Organic Hair Experts.

1 Quick and Easy Way To Distract From The Gray: Adding Volume!

Flat hair makes gray hairs more noticeable, Abdullah explains, and creating volume is an instant way to detract from this.“Create volume at the roots to help mask the gray,” Abdullah advises. “Try using a curling iron at the roots of your hair up top to create more body and volume,” she continues. “When your hair is moving this way and that, the grays are not as noticeable.” Depending on where your gray hairs are, there are many ways to conceal them with volume.

Another way to add volume to your locks is to change your part, Abdullah says. “For whatever reason, gray hairs like to hang out where they are most visible,” she adds. “So that can be right in the front of your head or on either side of a part. You can defeat those little fellas by changing your part to a different area of your head where grays aren't yet as visible.”

If you like wearing your hair up, Abdullah has a few go-to voluminous styles she swears by. “If your grays come out randomly at the top of your head, making a high bun or topknot can help conceal them. Play around with what looks nice on you, whether it's a sleek or messy 'do,” she says.

Fontana agrees that it’s all about the styling and that “a great way to hide gray is to wear a messy, tousled look.” She also suggests spraying the gray with some gray cover spray to blend the harsh lines. “In a pinch you can even dab on brow gel to blend greys,” she says.

Lastly, if you’re finding the most graying by your hairline, adding a few cute accessories to an already volume-building hairstyle can work as well. “If you have gray hairs peeking out around your hairline, pop on a headband,” says Abdullah. “If your headband isn't quite as wide as you need it to be, change it up into a thin scarf—then you can rock that top knot or messy bun with the rest of your hair.”

Overall, there are many ways to conceal gray hairs, but as these experts explain, the most helpful and stylish way to do this is by adding instant volume. “Most importantly, consult with your stylist,” Fontana concludes, “and don't wait too long in between appointments so the gray won’t overwhelm you."
