Fall means crisp air, pumpkin carving, apple orchards, and scary movies—not to mention a whole range of delicious seasonal foods to enjoy, from mulled apple cider to all of the pumpkin-flavored treats offered by Trader Joe’s. However, if you’re looking out for your health, it’s important to remember that some of the most popular fall treats come with a lot of downsides. In fact, there are few in particular that experts recommend steering clear of this year.
To discover a few of the worst sweets you should cut back on to keep your body in great shape, we spoke to functional health practitioner Omaira Ferreira. She told us that caramel apples, pumpkin spice lattes, and candy corn are unfortunately at the top of the list. Read on to learn about the health risks of each.
1. Caramel Apples
An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but Ferreira warns that adding caramel to the mix creates a different story. Although plain apples come with great health benefits thanks to their high fiber content, she recommends avoiding this sweet treat this fall.
"The combination of sticky caramel and a large apple can result in a high sugar and calorie content," she warns. "Consuming caramel apples frequently can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of dental cavities." Yikes!
2. Pumpkin Spice Lattes
As much as we hate to say it, pumpkin spice lattes are another delicious but detrimental treat. This fan-favorite beverage comes with a lot of health risks.
"Pumpkin spice lattes, although loved by many, are often loaded with added sugars and unhealthy ingredients," Ferreira says. All of that sugar can lead to a range of complications. "These beverages can be high in calories and may contribute to weight gain and blood sugar imbalances if consumed frequently," she adds. Say it ain't so!
3. Candy Corn
Candy corn is quite a divisive candy. Some people love it, some people hate it. Regardless of where you stand on this debate, Ferreira says that we're all better off avoiding this sugar bomb.
"Candy corn is a classic fall candy, but it primarily consists of sugar, artificial colors, and flavors," she warns. "Eating too much candy corn can contribute to elevated blood sugar levels, dental problems, and an unhealthy intake of empty calories."
The bottom line
Although it's best to limit your intake of sugar whenever possible, remember that it's okay to treat yourself every once in a while. If you're really craving a pumpkin spice latte, indulging once or twice won't kill you! However, when you avoid these foods in the long run, you'll be one step closer to a healthier body. And luckily, there are plenty of healthy sweet treats to choose from.
