After going through a tumultuous divorce, Kelly Clarkson isn’t quite ready to fully venture back into music. The “Since U Been Gone” hitmaker, 40, explained during her recent appearance on Apple Music’s The Chart Show with Brooke Reese that her music career has been the “hardest thing to navigate” after an impactful split (from ex-husband talent manager Brandon Blackstock) affected her personal life.

In the new interview, the Voice coach discussed her divorce from Blackstock, 45, the struggles that emerged with it, and her plans for future music. “It’s been the hardest thing to navigate,” she said about making music. “I’ve never had this difficult of a project,” she added. “It’s one of those things where I’m a human and I’m going through something huge. Obviously, everybody knows a huge divorce went through and it’s been like, two years and not easy with kids.”

The “Breakaway” singer and Blackstock share two children: daughter River, 8, and son Remington, 6. They first split in June 2020 after nearly 7 years of marriage and their divorce was finalized in March 2022. Clarkson also said in the interview that dealing with her divorce “in the public eye” while also trying to spend time with her children “makes it just a whole different dynamic.” She also explained that songwriting has always been an outlet for her and her emotions, and spoke of the power of music in healing. “I’ve always had a hard time communicating and literally that’s how I became a writer at the age of 10, because my mom was like, ‘You need to quit bottling it up. And then you explode. You need to communicate better,'” she said. “And so I literally started writing to help me do that.”Soon after the interview aired last week, fans on Twitter sent the pop star messages of love, support and encouragement. “You’ve been thru so much, we’re so proud of everything you do,” wrote one fan while sweetly another added, “love you no matter what Kelly!” Others commended her “incredible” new cover EP, Kellyoke, that dropped last month, containing her covers of popular songs like “Happier Than Ever” by Billie Eilish and “Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead, among others.

As for if (and hopefully when!) fans can expect new music from Clarkson, she said that it’s “coming,” and that she is still figuring out what she wants to release (a post-divorce rock record sounds good to us!) “I just got to get my crap together!” she joked about the situation, as fans seem more than understanding of her situation, welcoming, and appreciative of new music whenever she is ready for it.
