When it comes to shedding pounds, avoiding fast food is usually the wisest choice. Still, there are times when you’re in a hurry, on the move, or simply have a hankering for Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, or McDonald’s.

In such moments, it’s helpful to be aware of the healthiest selections available. Fortunately, each of these popular chains offers a variety of more nutritious options.

Here, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best fast food choices for weight loss, recommended by health experts, dietitians, nutritionists, and other specialists.

Health Experts Share 3 Weight Loss-Friendly Meal Ideas From Fast Food Chains

1. Starbucks Oatmeal

While all of the sweet pastries on display may be tempting, limiting your intake of refined carbs and sugar is an important part of staying healthy for weight loss. Luckily, Starbucks offers many different breakfast options, including a few healthy menu items.

Nutritionist Paula Rubello recommends going with the oatmeal. "If you are planning to eat breakfast at Starbucks, get the plain oatmeal for some high fiber carbohydrates and top it with nuts for healthy fats," she suggests. "Order some egg white bites for protein and you will have a very balanced breakfast!" Sounds perfect!

2. Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Sandwich

When you're in the mood for a tasty Chick-fil-A sandwich but prefer to avoid the pitfalls of fried chicken, the Grilled Chicken Sandwich is an excellent choice. The succulent, marinated grilled chicken breast is absolutely delectable and boasts 28 grams of protein along with 4 grams of fiber, ensuring you feel satisfied and full.

As Lisa Richards, registered nutritionist, health expert and creator of The Candida Diet tells us, grilled chicken is typically the "healthiest method of eating chicken, but you must be mindful to avoid adding fats and high calorie toppings," when it comes to your weight loss journey. "You will be more nourished because you are opting for lean animal protein rather than meat high in fat," she notes.

Richards also points out that eating chicken on a regular basis can "replace meats high in saturated fat that can lead to heart disease and other chronic illnesses." In addition, she shares that "you may feel more satisfied because of the protein content in grilled chicken."

3. McDonald’s Sausage Burrito

If you’re pressed for options and McDonalds is the only restaurant around, their Sausage Burrito is a viable breakfast option as it is a solid source of protein. Nutritionist Heather Hanks notes that it is only 310 calories and contains 2 grams of sugar so you won’t have to brace yourself for a crash.

Experts also recommend adding veggies onto a meal wherever you can, so ask if there are any greens available to add into this burrito if you feel it’s lacking.

The Bottom Line

It’s a common understanding that fast food is typically not the best choice for your health. However, in the whirlwind of a busy life, convenience often takes precedence.

Yet, choosing the drive-thru doesn’t have to derail your health and weight loss aspirations. By opting for protein-rich selections and leaner alternatives from the menu, you can stay on track with your goals and still indulge in an occasional treat.
