Eggs have been recalled in nine different states after it’s discovered they could be connected to the nationwide outbreak of Salmonella. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) reported the recall on September 6th, warning consumers to check if they’ve purchased the recalled brands of whole chicken eggs. Keep reading for more information, including what you should do if you’ve purchased the recalled product.
Egg Recall
Eggs distributed by Milo's Poultry Farms and Tony's Fresh Market are the two brands linked to the Salmonella outbreak. The distributors shipped their eggs to locations in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin, though according to the FDA, the infections have been reported in California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia as well.
All eggs branded with Milo's Poultry Farms and Tony's Fresh Market are included in this recall. The eggs can be any size (M, L, XL, and Jumbo), any type (cage free or organic), and have any expiration dates. If you live in Michigan, Wisconsin, or Illinois and have recently purchased a carton of eggs with Milo's Poultry Farms or Tony's Fresh Market labels, the eggs have been recalled.
Salmonella Contamination
The recall was announced after the products were linked to Salmonella infections that are spreading across the nation. According to the FDA, "65 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella" in total. Illness related to this particular recall started between May 23, 2024 and August 10, 2024, and though no deaths have been reported, 24 of these cases required hospitalization.
The recall initiated after the FDA discovered that "environmental samples tested positive for the bacteria" and later found that these "samples were related to an ongoing Salmonella outbreak investigation." Salmonella symptoms generally take between 12 and 72 hours to manifest after eating the contaminated food. Symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps, can last up to seven days.
What You Should Do If You've Purchased Recalled Eggs
If you've purchased eggs from the brands Tony's Fresh Market or Milo's Poultry Farms, do not consume them and throw them out immediately. Additionally, if you store your eggs outside of their original carton, it's important to sanitize the container or any surfaces the eggs may have touched in order to reduce the risk of cross contamination.
