Nothing beats having the freedom to style your own hair. From long beach waves to short curls with bangs, the possibilities are quite endless. However, if you suffer from certain concerns like hair loss and thinning hair, it’s understandable that you might feel like your options are somehow limited. You definitely don’t want to worsen the condition of your strands, so it’s important that you practice proper hair care habits.

In fact, heat styling is very crucial for people with thinning hair. Using a blow dryer, hair curler, and flat iron can actually do further damage to your locks, so you have to be extra cautious when styling your hair with these tools. Below, hair and health expert Dr. Virginia Blackwell, M.D. of Eve Magazine shares the most common mistakes people commit when using a flat iron. Keep reading to know more, and learn why you should avoid them at all costs.

What You Need To Know About Heat Styling If You Have Thinning Hair

According to Dr. Blackwell, “Heat styling may help strengthen your hair and add volume and strength to thinning hair. However, it is important to be careful when using heat styling products as they may damage your hair if used too heavily.” She warns, “Heat styling may increase breakage and promote split ends by causing the hair shaft to pound against the brush. [Also, hair can cling] to the brush and the strand of hair to be pulled. This process can also lead to increased frizz.”

Additionally, Dr. Blackwell says, “Heat styling should only be used on freshly washed hair as it may damage the integrity of your natural curls. It should be done on relaxed or wet hair to avoid damaging the cuticle.” She notes, “Heat styling may also not be appropriate for you if you have coarse or damaged hair with hard-to-curl locks.”

Common Mistakes People Commit When Using A Flat Iron

Not moving the iron along with the hair.

"When using a flat iron, it is crucial to move it along the hair slowly and evenly to avoid damage," Dr. Blackwell tells us.

Not using a detangler.

She advises, "Using a detangler will help prevent tangles from forming in your hair because it helps pull moisture out."

Not using the correct heat setting.

"While the best way to use a flat iron is by personal preference, specific guidelines should be followed," Dr. Blackwell emphasized.

Tips For Using A Flat Iron

Lastly, as suggested by Dr. Blackwell, here are some tips when using this particular heat styling tool:

•"Before using a flat iron, always make sure your hair is either dry or damp."

•"Use the flat iron at different temperature levels to achieve the distinct look you want."

•"Only use the flat iron for styling your hair. [As cliché as it may sound], don't try to use it for burning your hair or shaving."
