Flat, Weak Hair? Stylist Shares 3 Flattering Haircuts Older Women Should Try For Noticeable Volume This Fall

Whether you like short, medium, or long hair, there’s a perfect hairstyle out there that is bound to make you look fabulous. The best haircuts for women over 40 are, put simply, those hairstyles and cuts that make you feel like your gorgeous authentic self. For some that means keeping their hair past their shoulders — others can’t imagine growing their hair past a pixie or bob. None of these choices are wrong, but there is one thing to keep in mind before choosing a style.

Any haircut you get should be able to take weak, flat hair and make it look and feel stronger, healthier, and thicker. This is no easy feat — but it can be done. Professional hairstylist Justin Hickox reveals three of the best hairstyles for women over — they are flattering and can work their magic on weak, flat hair.

1. Long, Layered Cut

A long, layered cut allows for movement and texture, but also takes bulk out of the body of your hair so that your hair doesn’t have a triangular shape with a flat top and more voluminous bottom. If you think your hair is too thin and fine for layers, Hickox says this is a misconception. There are ways to appropriately layer your hair so that it gives you volume. This hairstyle can be worn up, down, curly, straight, or wavy.

2. Layered Bob

A layered bob is different from a classic blunt bob — the layers are key to giving it a ton of movement. Throughout time, bobs have been in style, Hickox explains, but layering your bob avoids a triangle shape (similar to the long, layered cut) that drags the eye down. Layering the bob takes the bulk out of the sides. You can dress a layered bob up or down, which is one of the best things about this cut.

3. Pixie Bob

A pixie bob, which will go by other names as well, is a combination of the pixie and bob. This cut gives you extra length on top and tapered sides, which creates more volume in the temple area, helping to lift the fact, highlight your cheekbones, and make them look more structured. The sides of your hair should angle down into the face for the most impact.
