The One Food You Should Never Order When Eating A Restaurant, According To A Chef

When you're going out to eat, nothing is off limits. You can order whatever you're in the mood for and can get as many appetizers, entrées and desserts as you want. While this is true for most patrons, it should also be noted that there's one food chefs want you to stay away from: salmon!

Nooooo! If anything, we always thought that it was best to order salmon when you're dining out. Apparently, chef Hank Scrampton says that patrons should avoid it because the freshwater fish is notorious for carrying parasites!

"Freshwater fish are the most likely fish to carry parasites, which can be pretty gross," he says. Yikes! Thankfully, most restaurants serve frozen fish, which actually helps makes it safe to eat. "Most of the time they're killed by the freezing process," he continued.

Scrampton says sushi lovers are the ones who should be most wary of salmon. Aw, man! "It's funny, a lot of people would say that they would never want to eat frozen fish, but nearly all of the sushi you get has been frozen, and that's a good thing. Kills off a lot of the bad stuff and keeps the fish tasting fresh," he said.

If you're worried about ordering salmon the next time you dine out, there are ways you can find out if it's safe to eat. Ask your server if they can show you the logs for how long the fish was frozen and at what temperature. FDA Regulations say it must be frozen at -4 degrees Fahrenheit for at least a week. Good to know!
