Famous people are just like us: they need to eat! But what they consume is sometimes very different than us regular people. There’s a trend among celebs turning to the same foods over and over in their efforts to prevent weight gain. Being locked into an eating routine might strike you as boring. But think of it another way: When your body and mind become used to having a certain food you’re less tempted to overeat. It’s the same way that cutting sugar eventually leads to having no sugar cravings. Take a look at what foods these celebrities stick with.
Khloé Kardashian: Steel-Cut Oatmeal
Khloé Kardashian makes a mean smoothie when she wants to maintain her weight: steel-cut oats, flaxseed powder and almond milk. Each of these ingredients has anti-inflammatory properties that promote weight loss. In ¼-cup of oats there’s 5 grams of fiber and 7 grams of protein. The fiber is part soluble – it slows digestions and makes you feel satiated –and insoluble fiber – the kind that helps you get smooth moves (wink). “Regular and healthy bowel movements reduce belly bloating and improve digestion,” says Abbey Sharp, RD, of Abbey's Kitchen. Khloé wisely chooses steel-cut oats over rolled or instant because they’re not pre-cooked and are processed in a manner that helps them maintain more fiber and protein than other versions. Both flaxseeds and almonds have omega-3 fatty acids to further the anti-inflammatory effects.
Rita Ora: Eggs
One small egg can make a really big difference. "Some of the best foods are high in protein and good fats, which keep your blood sugar steady and provide energy from nutrient-dense sources that will keep you satiated,” says culinary nutrition expert, Andrea Wien. Eggs are one of these powerful proteins and a staple of singer Rita Ora’s diet. The egg is a nearly perfect food and it's a powerhouse in terms of nutrition, clocking in at 7 grams of protein plus a good dose of vitamins, minerals and anti-inflammatory omega-3s. Eggs also have vitamin D to help you burn fat instead of store it, plus they have vitamin B12 to help your body break down fat cells. Rita prefers eating only the whites either scrambled or hard-boiled, but every expert we’ve spoken to says the egg yolk contains the bulk of nutrients. Eggs are def a great weight loss idea but we’ll keep the yellows.
Katy Perry: Mushrooms
Katy Perry uses the “M Diet” to slim down her belly and lower half. And the M stands for mushrooms. She swaps out one meal daily for raw mushrooms over the course of 2 weeks. That sounds really hard to swallow! Mushrooms can be an awesome addition to your diet – 1 cup is only 20 calories. So just the act of lowering her calorie intake could be what helps Katy look so amazing, and you can do that minus the shrooms. You want big results from a diet but if you go big too soon, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. “Too often we think we’re not doing enough, so we give up,” says Denise Posnak Gaffney, a Pilates instructor and founder of MyBOD Wellness. “Value the small things you do and you can go much farther with your wellness goals.” That might mean cutting out sugar for one week, not one month, and reevaluating after that. Breaking goals into attainable chunks will make them easier to meet.
Victoria Beckham: Salmon
When the British pop-singer-turned-fashion-designer wanted to improve her skin, Victoria Beckham added salmon to her diet. She eats it every single day. Really! Salmon is always part of one daily meal. Literally hundreds of studies have been done that attest to salmon’s anti-inflammatory, fat-fighting benefits. Plus it’s an excellent source of protein. Do you know that old saying, “you are what you eat”? It’s totally true, especially for salmon. “Wild salmon dine on a crustacean called krill, which are loaded with an anti-inflammatory antioxidant called astaxanthin,” says Colette Heimowitz, a nutritionist with Atkins Nutritionals. You eat what it eats! Salmon is an excellent food and is healthiest when pan-seared, baked, mixed with quinoa or flaked into a salad.
Beyoncé: Raw Fruits & Veggies
“Reach for a piece of fruit when a slim figure is your goal,” says Rachel Swanson, a RDN at Lifespan Medicine. Beyoncé does. And she looks fierce. Research done over a 24-year period found that people who ate fruits high in anthocyanin and flavonoids lost more weight. Swanson says you can find these miracle compounds in apples, pears, berries, prunes and strawberries. Bonus: Vegetables like peppers and celery were also associated with less weight gain in this study! Bey is reportedly a fan of the raw food diet, that suggests cooking removes essential nutrients from fruits, vegetables, grains and seeds that your body needs in order to cleanse itself. The goal is to stick to food in its raw state. It’s getting back to basics, people! Swap out processed snacks and bring in nature’s bounty – just don’t sauté the broccoli!
