If you’re aiming for a “new you” in the new year, you’re probably planning to commit to a lot of health-focused resolutions—and that oftentimes includes changes to your diet. Reducing sugar intake typically tops the list, as many people are aware of its link to weight gain, inflammation, and chronic diseases. However, according to a recent Instagram reel by Dr. Eric Berg, there are a lot of other dietary culprits that could be even more harmful to your body.

But what are they, exactly? In his reel, Dr. Berg highlights four specific foods and additives that are “more deadly than sugar,” causing issues like damaging your liver and disrupting your gut microbiome. Find all of his warnings below.

1. Trans Fats

"Trans fats have been on the market for over 100 years, and it’s only since 2018 that they were finally banned from the US," Dr. Berg says. Commonly found in partially hydrogenated oils, trans fats have been linked to heart disease, inflammation, and other chronic health issues. Although banned, trace amounts may still be present in some products, so it’s crucial to read labels carefully and avoid processed foods where trans fats might linger.

2. High-Fructose Corn Syrup

High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a common ingredient in processed foods and beverages, but it can be extremely harmful to your health. "This is worse than sugar because it can cause more weight than sugar," says Dr. Berg. He also notes its impact on the liver: “"t creates a lot of damage to the liver because the body treats high-fructose corn syrup just like alcohol." If you're looking to improve liver function and overall health in the new year, cutting HFCS is essential.

3. Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners, although often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, actually come with an array of their own risks. "Artificial sweeteners can affect your microbiome," Dr. Berg warns. He further explains that they "can even give you insulin resistance, which leads to weight gain." Instead of aiding weight loss, these sweeteners could disrupt gut health and metabolic function, ultimately thwarting your health goals.

matlodextrin

4. Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin, a starch-based additive, poses a unique to your health. "It’s not even a sugar; it’s a starch," Dr. Berg says. "In fact, it acts worse than a sugar on the glycemic index—it can go up to 185 compared to glucose, which is only 100." This means maltodextrin can cause significant blood sugar spikes, potentially leading to insulin resistance and other metabolic issues.

Ultimately, focusing on cutting out these harmful ingredients can help you make 2025 your healthiest year yet. While reducing sugar is a step in the right direction, avoiding trans fats, high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and maltodextrin can all make a significant impact on your overall health.
