As you age, the elasticity of your complexion may begin to break down, leading to sagging, loose, or crepey skin. Although a good skincare routine is going to be the frontline of defense against signs of aging, your diet actually has a larger impact on your appearance than you may think, and certain foods can help to repair and prevent some of the most prevalent skin care woes. If you’ve noticed that your skin has become crepey or begun to sag, these are the four foods you need to be integrating into your diet for a tight, taut complexion.
Salmon
Salmon is a superfood that benefits not only the overall function of your body, but your skin in particular. While salmon is packed with a number of vitamins and omega-3 that help to ease inflammation, it also contains astaxanthin, which is an antioxidant that helps to preserve youth in your skin. “So that helps with the same sort of thing ― creates more collagen, calms inflammation, [and is] also a fantastic anti-aging agent,” explains board-certified dermatologist Dr. Melda Isaac to Huffpost. “A 2012 study found that astaxanthin actually helped improve the look of wrinkles, age spots and skin texture.”
Bone Broth
Collagen production is often something that falls to the wayside as your body begins to age, and your skin can suffer the consequences. Bone broth, however, is packed with collagen which can help to fight against signs of aging and firm up your skin over time so that you can appear younger. According to Health, “Because it's rich in amino acids, bone broth promotes collagen production, meaning it could help keep your skin youthful-looking (buh-bye, wrinkles). Collagen and elastic tissue are found in the dermis, or middle layer, of the skin and give it its fullness and plumpness, explains Dr. Jaliman.” Soup is not only great for weight loss, but works wonders on your complexion as well!
Pomegranate
Pomegranate is packed with antioxidants, making them great for fighting inflammation and signs of aging in your complexion. Crepey skin is caused by collagen breakdown in the skin, combined with a lack of moisture, and pomegranates are known for increasing collagen production, naturally fighting against aging. Byrdie reports, “Pomegranates may help protect against premature aging by helping reduce the signs of skin aging caused by sun damage and exposure, such as wrinkles and fine lines. Pomegranates may also help prevent hyperpigmentation and age spots.”
Olive Oil
Great for cooking, olive oil also has known anti-inflammatory benefits which may help to fight against aging and protect the skin from future damage. According to Healthline, “Nearly 73% of olive oil consists of monounsaturated fat, which is associated with increased skin elasticity and firmness. Two studies looked at food records and questionnaires completed by middle-aged and older adults. They found that those with the highest intake of monounsaturated fat from olive oil were least likely to have severe sun damage.”
