The medical community has said for years now that the gut is like a second brain. From your energy levels to your mental state to your weight management, your gut health controls so many different functions in the body. When your digestive system isn’t operating properly, it could be a sign that your gut isn’t working the way it should. Your gut health comes down to what you’re putting in your body–so what are some foods you should be eating to strengthen your gut? We asked Sarah Williams, MS, RD, founder of Sweet Balance Nutrition, her favorite foods to recommend that will leave you feeling your best.
Flaxseeds
“Whole flaxseeds are a great food to add to your diet,” Williams says, “Flaxseeds contain fiber, which helps you stay full longer, and are a great source of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.” She recommends incorporating flaxseeds into your diet by sprinkling them on top of salads, or adding them to oatmeal.
Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein and contains probiotics, which promote good gut bacteria and overall health. “Intake of probiotics from foods has also been correlated with reduced weight, reduced body fat, improved blood glucose levels and improved insulin sensitivity.” Williams recommends greek yogurt as a breakfast or a snack, but look for options that are unsweetened, and instead use berries to add flavor.
Whole Grains
Williams recommends whole grains as another excellent source of fiber, which helps with digestion. Research has also shown that diets rich in whole grains are linked with lower inflammatory markers in the body. She recommends adding whole grain farro or quinoa to salads, or making a bowl with chicken, veggies, and brown rice.
Eating balanced meals with whole foods is the key to having a healthy digestive system, sharp mind, and steady energy. However, you should always consult with your doctor before making any drastic lifestyle change or starting a new nutrition program.
