Buying fresh produce isn’t always healthier than frozen or canned alternatives. If you haven’t heard, there is a salmonella outbreak – and foods at many popular grocery chains have been compromised. Salmonella is a bacterial infection you can get from eating foods that have been exposed to the bacteria. Its symptoms include cramps, diarrhea and a fever – so you really don’t want to get this infection. It can last up to a week after eating contaminated food.
Here are the foods you should avoid right now.
Onions
The FDA has warned about both red and yellow onions that have been supplied to Trader Joe’s and Ralph’s grocery stores on the west coast. Plus, 640 cases of salmonella in 43 states linked to red, white, yellow and sweet onions from brands including Tender Loving Care, El Competitor, Hartley’s Best, Onions 52, Majestic, Kroger and Food Lion.
Salsa
And unfortunately, the outbreak doesn’t stop there. Prepared grocery store foods made with onions have been compromised. The FDA has warned against potential contamination in salsa jars including 15-ounce jars of Salsa Verde and Saddlin' Up Salsa Hot, Medium and Mild, with best buy dates ranging from August 16 to September 30.
Macaroni Salad
Similarly, some macaroni salads have been compromised as well. There have been traces of salmonella found in macaroni and pasta salads by Taylor Farms sold at Kroger.
Peaches
And it isn’t only onions that have been affected - you should be careful about peaches, too. The FDA has recalled peaches sold at Aldi’s, Kroger Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart and Wegmans. These include yellow and white Wawona Peaches, Wawona Organic Peaches, Prima Peaches, Outside Market Peaches, Kroger Peaches and Wegmans Peaches.
