When it comes to makeup tips and hacks, YouTube tutorials are a treasure trove of valuable solutions and techniques for all of us, especially those seeking advice on foundation for mature beauties over 40. A popular creator and makeup artist, Risa Flashner, presented an engaging and enlightening video demonstrating how to combine a concealer and foundation together to create a hydrating, smooth and less textured foundation look overall.

This mixing hack, she noted, can be done with any hydrating concealer and “sheer or semi-sheer” foundation. “With this hack, you are able to get variable amounts of coverage with just one foundation,” she explained. She also stressed that it looks “beautiful on mature skin,” while also appearing “natural and never heavy” or cakey. “It’s not going to settle into fine lines or even deep lines on the face,” she added, while using products from MAC Cosmetics.

Pro Tip: Mix Concealer with Semi-Sheer Foundation for Ample Coverage for Mature Skin

The first thing you might want to have is a metal makeup palette to help you mix the concealers and foundations of your choice, however Flashner pointed out that it isn't "totally necessary." An alternative method she offered is using the back of your hand as your palette. "You want to start off by experimenting. It might take a couple of tries before you figure out what ratio works best for you," she said.

She then put a two drops of liquid concealer on her metal palette and one pump of liquid foundation next to it. "Now I'm taking a foundation brush, swirling it together and applying it to my face," she said. While zooming in on the product on her complexion, she continued: "I'm getting coverage that still looks like skin. It's not emphasizing my pores, and I'm able to do one side of my face with that amount of product."

Next, Flashner used less of her foundation and two pumps of concealer on her palette before mixing again and applying. "This is giving me more coverage than the other ratio," she explained. "It's also a little bit lighter, but I don't think you can tell that I have two shades on either side of my face," she said while comparing. "It's still giving a very natural look."

If you have oily skin, Flashner said that "you'll want to set this with a powder." She stressed that "you'll want to experiment with what works for you," whether that be two pumps of concealer and one drop of foundation or vice versa. "I would start off with this two to one ratio," she recommended, meaning two drops of liquid concealer and one pump of foundation, and "then experiment from there."

Flashner then added blush, eyeshadow, mascara, eyeliner and lipstick to complete her makeup look. She posed in natural lighting to show just how much coverage the foundation and concealer hack created for her skin, and what a smooth and almost wrinkle-free appearance it created! (We'll def be trying this in our own routines!)
