When you’re applying foundation to mature skin, a few new challenges arise. The same foundation that you’ve always used may not work well anymore because your skin goes through normal changes throughout life. That doesn’t mean you need to give up on makeup — it just means you may need a new foundation to add to your makeup kit.

Pretty Over Fifty beauty pro has found the absolute best foundation for mature skin, and she isn’t gatekeeping.

Here are some great tips for applying foundation to mature skin — and a product pick that may just be your newest favorite.

Revlon Illuminance Foundation

The Revlon Illuminance Foundation is Kimberly’s favorite new foundation. She describes it as dewy and says it gives you a glow — for a $13 price point at Ulta. This foundation is wonderful on older skin that may be prone to dryness because it contains 5% squalene and hyaluronic acid, combining the benefits of makeup and skincare in one product. It’s also infused with botanicals to fight free radicals. So, basically, you’re applying foundation for some coverage, but instead of clogging your pores, this foundation is helping to hydrate and moisturize your skin.

It comes in 28 shades and Revlon even offers an online quiz to help you determine your ideal foundation and concealer match.

Apply Primer

Kimberly always starts her makeup routine with a primer — this is important to help grip your foundation and other makeup and allows it go on smoother and stay on longer. Her primer of choice is DRMTLGY Number 1 Primer, which she says has a “grippy” feel that gets the job done, but also makes her skin feel super smooth.

Kimberly turned to Revlon Illuminance Foundation after being a long-term fan of Revlon ColorStay. Unfortunately, after ColorStay changed its formula, she says she was no longer impressed with the foundation. But she is “tickled” to find that the Illuminance Foundation is just as good, if not better, than her “holy grail” foundation,  Dior Forever Skin Glow, which is high praise.

Kimberly applies the foundation in dots around her face and then works it onto her skin by pressing against it with a large brush. She then surveys her face and adds a few more dots here and there where she feels she could use a bit of extra coverage. After pressing the brush against her makeup and skin again, she take a sponge and presses it against her face to help set it and make it look more natural. She describes the foundation’s feeling as a little bit “tacky,” but says it dries fast and makes her skin feel hydrated. And she looks like she is glowing!

Set Your Makeup With Powder

Don’t forget to set your makeup. Kimberly applies translucent powder to a large brush and gently taps it under the eyes and on her forehead, cheeks, and chin. She says she avoids her marionette lines because she knows the powder will settle in them. She finishes things off with her trusted sponge, which she presses against her skin to help blend her makeup and create a natural look.

She looks gorgeous for any age — and part of the reason is because she honors her skin where it’s at in the moment and uses products and techniques that bring out her best.
