A Skincare Expert Shares 4 Foundations For Mature Skin: Healthy-Looking Skin With A Youthful Glow

A great foundation for your skin is a foundation that is mindful of your skin’s needs. When you have mature skin, this often means choosing makeup that won’t settle in the pores or make texture more apparent. It also means avoiding anything that’s too matte or drying, as your skin may need more moisture at this stage of the game.

Makeup Expert Stephanie Marie ranked a few foundations that she recommends for mature skin Some are better than others and Marie tells it like it is. Here are four foundations for mature skin that Marie selects for consideration, along with their ingredients and potential pros and cons (so you can decide if one is right for your skin).

One Size Turn Up the Base Blurring Foundation

This blurring foundation offers medium to full, buildable coverage with a matte finish to eliminate any shine. It comes in 18 shades and you can select your color by undertone: rosy, golden, or neutral, which is a helpful feature. It’s waterproof, longer, and sweatproof, Marie mentions, and its ingredients include white rose stem cells to improve the appearance of skin tone and minimize oil over time and a blend of hydrating avocado and mango.

This foundation has a “moderately thick texture” and sets really quickly so it’s important to apply it and blend it with a damp sponge in thin layers. The end result can be “beautiful” and “natural,” Marie says. Keep in mind that this foundation is ideal for oily and combination skin and may be too matte and drying for dry or even normal skin.

Jane Iredale Beyond Matte Liquid Foundation

This (pricey) foundation provides light-to-medium coverage that gives 3-in-1 benefits as a primer, concealer, and foundation (this doesn’t necessarily mean you should skip a separate primer). It’s supposed to minimize the appearance of pores and reduce shine and Marie says it feels lightweight when applied and blends well no matter which method of application you use. She says she picks up a slight, faint floral scent, which is something to keep in mind if you’re sensitive to scent and Marie says, despite the manufacturer’s claims, the coverage she got from this foundation was more light than medium. “It feels airy and lightweight,” she says. It comes in 18 shades and lasts around 6-7 hours, according to Marie.

If you’re looking for a mineral foundation and have dryer or normal skin, this could be a good choice for you.

Lys Beauty Triple Fix Blurring Skin Tint Foundation Stick

In the mood to try an entirely different foundation format? This foundation stick claims to be a serum, primer, and foundation in one. It comes in 22 shades and its ingredients include rosehip oil, watermelon seed extract, and green tea extract. According to Marie, it has a slight scent from its natural ingredients and provides a very creamy texture that goes on like “butter.” No matter which application method she used, Marie says it accentuated a few of her dryer areas and the coverage is light to medium. It provides a “radiant to glowy” finish and doesn’t set easily (so grab that setting powder). But it can be a great choice if you need a foundation with more hydration.

Dior Forever Skin Perfect Stick

Although Marie doesn’t feature this top-tier foundation in her ratings, she mentions it often. And that’s because this foundation stick by Dior is a legend among women with mature skin. It’s pricey, but Dior’s foundation stick provides buildable coverage that is designed to last for 24 hours and give a “blurring” effect. It can serve as a foundation and concealer and its hydrating ingredients include botanical seed oils (it will give a scent, so be mindful of that if you’re sensitive to fragrance).

According to reviewers, this foundation stick gives “nice texture” and “good coverage” and won’t create a flaky mess if you have dry skin. As for its longevity, several reviews can attest to that as well, including this reviewer who said, “I decided to try this foundation stick on a night out with friends. It lasted for 8+ hours. I was dancing most of the night and it stayed on. I didn’t wear any concealer due to the foundation having enough coverage. I do have sensitive, dry, acne prone skin but my skin tolerated this well. I plan on incorporating more moisture in my routine. I also did use a primer with this. It is a buildable yet natural looking foundation.”
