Frozen foods are a convenient solution for modern-day lifestyles, offering a quick and easy way to prepare meals. However, it’s essential to be mindful of their nutritional impact, particularly in relation to inflammation and waistline concerns. While frozen foods can be a time-saving option, some processed frozen items may contain ingredients that contribute to inflammation in the body and expand your midsection.
We spoke with Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT; and Joanna Wen, certified health coach and founder of Spices & Greens, to learn about three frozen foods that could lead to inflammation and add inches to your waistline. They shared that frozen yogurt, frozen smoothie packs, and low-fat frozen dinners are the options to stay away from as much as possible.
Frozen Yogurt
Frozen yogurt, often perceived as a healthier alternative to ice cream, may have implications for inflammation and waistline management. While it offers a lower fat content compared to traditional ice cream, the added sugars in many frozen yogurt varieties can contribute to increased inflammation in the body. Excessive sugar intake has been linked to inflammatory responses, potentially impacting overall health. Additionally, the calorie content in frozen yogurt, especially when laden with toppings and syrups, can contribute to weight gain and the expansion of the waistline.
"Frozen yogurt, while usually lower in calories and fats than ice cream, are still loaded with sugar, flavorings, and preservatives. Most of the ones you find in stores can still contribute to weight gain and inflammation throughout the body," says Feder.
Wen adds that "frozen desserts like fruit-flavored frozen yogurt can be a concern, as they often contain high amounts of added sugars and artificial additives, both of which can contribute to inflammation and potential weight gain, especially around the waistline."
Frozen Smoothies Packs
Frozen smoothie packs, a popular choice for quick and nutritious beverages, may potentially have negative impacts on inflammation and waistline concerns. It's crucial to be cautious of added sugars, artificial sweeteners, and high-calorie ingredients that some frozen smoothie packs may contain.
"Frozen smoothies packs are convenient and popular to use. However, they are typically high in sugars, calories, and additives. This can easily add on inches to your waist and lead to inflammation as well," says Feder.
Wen agrees and states that "some of these smoothie mixes can contain high levels of added sugars, which can lead to inflammation and weight gain around the waistline."
Low Fat Frozen Dinners
Low-fat frozen dinners are often marketed as a healthier option for those seeking convenient and portion-controlled meals. However, the impact on inflammation and waistline size should be considered. While these dinners may be lower in fat, they can still contain significant amounts of processed carbohydrates, sodium, and artificial additives.
Feder elaborates and says that "low fat frozen dinners are marketed as healthy dinners however they still contribute high amounts of sodium, preservatives, and are usually not satiating enough to only have one. This can lead to overeating, increases in weight, and inflammation throughout the body."
It's essential for consumers to scrutinize nutritional labels, choose options with minimal processed ingredients, and complement these meals with a balanced and varied diet to mitigate potential inflammation and waistline concerns.
