Frozen meals have become a convenient solution for those seeking quick and hassle-free dining options. They offer a time-efficient alternative in our fast-paced lives, providing a wide range of choices for various tastes and dietary preferences. However, it’s crucial to note that not all frozen meals are created equal. While frozen meals can be convenient, some are laden with ingredients that may contribute to inflammation, weight gain, and negatively impact overall health.
We spoke with dietitian Krutika Nanavati; Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT; and Joanna Wen, certified health coach and founder of Spices & Greens to learn about three frozen foods to stay away from. They revealed that frozen pizza, frozen fried chicken, and frozen yogurt are the ones to minimize as much as possible.
Frozen Pizza
While frozen pizza offers a quick and easy solution for busy days, it's essential to be mindful of its potential impact on health. Some frozen pizzas may be linked to inflammatory responses, weight gain, and adverse effects on overall well-being.
"These pizzas often contain excessive amounts of sodium, trans fats, and refined carbohydrates, which can have negative effects on our bodies. Consuming such ingredients can lead to inflammation and weight gain, particularly around the belly area," says Nanavati.
Frozen Fried Chicken
Frozen fried chicken, known for its crispy exterior and flavorful appeal, has become a popular choice for those seeking a quick and convenient meal. However, indulging in this frozen delight may come with health considerations.
Nanavati elaborates further and says "frozen fried chicken is an unhealthy option that can contribute to inflammation and abdominal fat. Consistently consuming fried chicken can lead to chronic inflammation in the body, which in turn contributes to various health issues."
"These meals tend to be high in calories and lacking in essential nutrients like fiber and protein, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy gut and reducing inflammation," she notes.
Frozen Yogurt
Frozen yogurt, often perceived as a healthier alternative to traditional ice cream, has gained popularity for its creamy texture and variety of flavors. But many store-bought frozen yogurts may come with negative implications for your health.
"Frozen yogurt, while usually lower in calories and fats than ice cream, are still loaded with sugar, flavorings, and preservatives. Most of the ones you find in stores can still contribute to weight gain and inflammation throughout the body," says Feder.
Wen adds that "frozen desserts like fruit-flavored frozen yogurt can be a concern, as they often contain high amounts of added sugars and artificial additives, both of which can contribute to inflammation and potential weight gain, especially around the waistline."
