Many professional makeup artists say that the impact of the perfect shade and precise application of blush to boost natural beauty and achieve a radiant appearance is significant.

To help you attain a luminous, glowing complexion this autumn, we did some YouTube tutorial research and also consulted professional makeup artists and specialists.

We asked them for tips on how to create a lifted look using blush and how to achieve a flattering appearance for those over 40 with four easy techniques.

4 Essential Blush Hacks For Women Over 40, According To Professional MUAs1 Apply Blush Higher Than You Would Normally On Your Cheekbones

As noted in a helpful and insightful tutorial video (above), popular creator and MUA Gabriela Soares notes that “blush can be a game changer when it comes to brightening and lifting up the face, but as we get older, certain techniques or formulas can actually do the opposite.” They can “collapse the face right down, and it can do it pretty much instantly,” she says. The changes that our faces go through as we age, “such as fine lines, texture, and sagging, can make blush a little bit tricky,” Soares stressed, but explained that with a certain placement hack, “you’ll know exactly how to apply it in a way that enhances your natural beauty without emphasizing any of those problematic areas.”

“My first tip is to perfect your placement. One common mistake is applying blush too low on the cheeks,” Soares said. She then said never to “place the blush to the apples of the cheeks.” That technique “can look really beautiful when you have a younger, fuller, or more lifted face, but as we get older, when we stop smiling, our faces have lost volume. The apples have drops, so when we don’t smile, our apples are lower,” she goes on. “All of a sudden, that blush that you placed up here is now super low on the face, almost hitting this nasal labial area. This placement will drag the face down and completely collapse it. Instead, what you want to do is apply it much higher on the cheekbones and maybe even feels natural to you and blend upwards towards the temple,” she advises.

This, she says, will give your face “a lifted and much more youthful” appearance. “There are two visualization tricks that I use here in order to know where to place it,” she adds, crediting the first one to fellow content creator, Wayne Goss. “That trick is to imagine a line coming from the outside of your eye and moving downwards. You want to place the blush starting at that line and then blend outwards and upwards. You can go a little bit into that line as well to soften it and blend it. But really, the majority of the blush should be from that line upwards,” the MUA noted. “The second visualization trick is to put two fingers beside your nose and start your blush there. It ends up being pretty much the same area as the first trick, but sometimes it’s just helpful to see things in a different way,” Soares shared.

2. Use A Light Hand And Build The Pigment Up Gradually

The creator's second tip "is to use a light hand and build the pigment up gradually." It's easier to add more product than it is to take it away, she stresses, especially when it comes to blush. "So start with a small amount of pigment on your brush. Tap off the excess and build it up slowly. This will give you more control and it will ensure that you don't overdo it, which can look heavy or just really unflattering, especially on mature skin," she says.

"If for whatever reason, you end up with too much pigment on your cheek, we've all been there. You don't have to wash your face and start again," she reassures. "You can soften it up by going over that area with a translucent powder and a nice clean brush."

3. Find The Best Blush Color Match For Your Skin Tone

When looking for the right color to match your skin and undertones, celebrity makeup artist Margina Dennis says that rose, terracotta, and coral tones can give the most "natural flush to the skin."

Finding one that works for you is (like with concealer, lipstick, etc,) a process of trial and error, but finding your exact skin tone and undertones can be done in a store with swatches on your hand.

4. Use Setting Spray After Blush To Help Conceal Texture And Creasing

At the end of your makeup look and even throughout the day, lightly adding setting spray can help lock your hard work into place, and Alyssia Chang, founder of Prevail Beauty, says it especially helps when it comes to wrinkles and fine lines.

“After applying your face makeup, take a damp beauty blender and gently mist 1-2 sprays of setting spray."

The Bottom Line

"Tap it under the eye area, the sides of the eyes, forehead, and laugh line areas,” she says.

“This method will prevent any areas with lines or texture from moving or having the makeup shift into those creases.” The more you know!
