We’ve all woken up looking less-than-well-rested before. No matter how much sleep you get, it is possible to find yourself with bags under your eyes or a sunken look around your eyes.
Believe it or not, sleep deprivation isn’t the only thing that may cause your eyes to look tired and dull. Typically, our eyes look sunken in when our skin is missing out on something like hydration or oils. So the best way to get rid of this look is to treat tired eyes at the source – and that doesn’t always mean getting more sleep.
We turned to the experts to discover how to get rid of of dark circles and sunken eyes once and for all.
I find when patients complain of sunken eyes, they are usually noticing volume loss in this area," Daniel Belkin, MD FAAD, dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon from New York Dermatology Group, told Shefinds.
He explained, "There are other factors that may contribute to "under eye circles" and these include bulging fat pads under the eye (which requires surgical correction) and hyperpigmentation on the skin (which can be treated with lasers, topicals, or peels).
"However, I think volume loss is by far and away the most common of the three, and the under eye is the first place many people notice volume loss happening on their face. As you age, the topography of the face changes, and you lose volume in the fat pads of the cheeks and under eye areas."
So how do we get rid of sunken eyes? Dr. Belkin has a solution.
He told us, "The best way to treat this is to revolumize the area with hyaluronic acid based fillers. Hyaluronic acid is one of the body's natural moisturizers and we can introduce this into areas of fat loss to add lift and replace lost volume. Often enhancing the cheeks can both lift the face and improve the appearance of sunken eyes, but if needed, I will use a soft filler directly under the eyes to gently elevate the hollows."
Try using an eye cream or moisturizer made with hyaluronic acid. You can find plenty of inexpensive options that will make a huge difference. Start with some of our favorites here.
