If your makeup routine has been feeling a little stale lately, it may be time for a simple update that will make it more fresh and modern. We went straight to the source to ask makeup artists about the tricks they rely on to bring a fresher, more youthful appeal to any look. Their answers were surprisingly simple. You won’t find suggestions to spend hours in the bathroom contouring and highlighting and bronzing your face to perfection — on the contrary, most advocate for simplifying your makeup routine rather than ramping it up. And, in many cases, the easy act of swapping one pencil color for another can bring an immediate lift to your face or give you a glow.

There is no rule that says once you reach a certain age you have to forego the eye shadow or lipstick you loved when you were 18. Some makeup products and techniques were meant to endure a lifetime because they give you a personalized, signature look that’s completely yours. And the biggest makeup hack of all is creating a look that feels good to you and makes you feel your confident best. But if you have been wondering lately how you can incorporate a few simple techniques into your routine that can make your makeup look more modern, Certified MAC Makeup Artist Farah Zaki,  a blogger at Independent Fashion Bloggers, says these are the four hacks makeup artists swear by to make your face look 10 years younger.

Fill in those brows:

“Your eyebrows begin to thin out and droop as you get older,” Zaki says. “Not only will creating the illusion of fuller eyebrows keep your face looking youthful, but it’ll also complement the rest of your features too.”

Use a brown eyeliner:

“It’s time to throw the black eyeliner in the bin,” Zaki says. “While the color adds a dramatic flair to every makeup look, it’s a little intense for people as they age.. It can make you appear older than you actually are. Hence, use a brown eyeliner as it gives you the intensity, but in a sophisticated, subtle way.”

Get rid of red lippies:

Your lips begin to thin out and look less defined over time and age, according to Zaki. “Though your pout will look fashion-forward, the deep color will only enhance the signs of aging. Opt [instead] for a neutral or light pink lip. If you really can’t part ways with the red shade, then try using a sheer alternative.”

Add a subtle highlighter:

“A highlighter prevents the flat-face look,” Zaki says. “It makes your face appear subtle yet youthful. Moreover, it gives dimension to your features.”

The best places on your face to apply highlighter are: the center of your forehead and chin, over the highest point of your cheekbones, and even a dot over your Cupid’s bow , which can really make your pout pop.
