Hailey Bieber has been making waves with her latest swoon-worthy makeup look: purple cat-eye liner. Last week, the model and beauty mogul graced us with an Instagram post showing off her stunning violet liner—and it’s been on our minds ever since.

Not only does the daring color instantly open up her eyes, but the subtle yet striking twist to the classic winged liner brings out the hazel and brown tones in her peepers. Isn’t it the perfect way to make a bold statement without going overboard?

We caught up with professional makeup artists to find out why this look is so flattering on brown and hazel eyes, and how to recreate it yourself. Read on for tips, insight and suggestions from Mandie Brice, pro MUA and makeup expert.

Breaking Down the Trendy Look: Hailey Bieber’s Purple Cat-Eye

In her April 21st Instagram carousel post for her 49.5 million followers, Bieber shared two mirror selfies, one side-profile shot and a cute video that emphasized her lilac eyeliner look. She captioned her upload with a purple heart and arms raised emoji while garnering millions of likes and thousands of comments of approval from fans.

The Rhode Beauty founder wore her tresses in a slicked-back updo, which helped draw attention to her makeup even more. Bieber rocked a thin purple line of eyeliner across her lid, which continued into a classic cat-eye wing.

On top of this, she added sparkly pink eyeshadow that helped highlight the wing even more. To top the eye look off, Bieber dazzled up her lashes with voluminous mascara and then snapped the gorgeous pics. Bieber has hazel eyes, and the purple clearly works so well with them. This, Brice tells us, is because of a classic color wheel theory.

Why Purple Liner Works So Well for Hazel and Brown Eyes

“A color that is near the opposite end of the color wheel as either the main color of someone’s eyes or the flecks of color within, can really brighten the eye,” Brice explains. She notes that a “purple eyeliner on eyes with flecks of yellow or gold” can make somene’s “eye color pop, and brighten up their face.”

For us brown-eyed or hazel-eyed gals, purple is a timeless choice if you want to make your eyes even more noticeable, Brice points out. When attempting this look for yourself, she has some helpful tips for adjusting to a look you might not be used to. She recommends opting for a “light touch,” as Bieber did, and applying product to the outer two-thirds of the eye on top.

How To Recreate The Look Yourself

Brice adds that you can choose to skip eyeliner ‘altogether on the bottom” or apply it “very lightly” on the outer two-thirds and “blend or smudge it into the lash line” for some slight definition.

She concludes that “more so than color, how the eyeliner is applied makes a big difference” in helping make your eyes pop effectively, like Bieber did here. Often, she says, “people will apply it in a very heavy fashion all the way around the eye, which can make the person look tired, and the eyes look heavy.” Noted!
