Hair Experts Swear By These 2 Shampoos To Boost Volume And Thickness
November 21, 2022 by Marissa Matozzo
Losing hair and the look of voluminous, thick tresses is inevitable for many with age, but with the right haircare products and balanced diet, you can revive flatter, thinner or duller locks. We reached out to professional hair stylists and hair experts for three shampoo suggestions to utilize for a bouncier, healthier and shinier look overall. Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Jessica Shults, professional hair stylist and owner of Twisted Scissors Salon, and Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles.
This shampoo, Shults explains, can “immediately make the hair look and feel thicker” if it is thinner or flatter, as this product is specifically designed for those struggling with hair loss. “Revolve also targets DHT, which is a hormone that causes hair loss,” Schults points out. So, If there is a presence of DHT, she notes that “this will also lead to fuller and thicker hair long-term, as the hair grows back in.” According to the product’s website, it is made with natural ingredients like lavender, which Abdullah recommends for more volume.
“When you’re over 40, your hair naturally starts to thin, but that doesn’t mean nothing can be done about it,” Abdullah acknowledges, adding, “most hair growth or hair thickening shampoos have ingredients that are anti-DHT, so if you’re actually having hair loss issues, you can definitely pick one of those up.” Hair thickening shampoos like this one that “contain lavender,” she says, can help to “put more of your hair follicles into the growth phase.” As we age, more of them will naturally be dormant, she continues, “so if you wake them up with natural ingredients, like lavender, your hair will actually be thicker.”
If you’re ever browsing at Ulta, you can pick up this shampoo, which Shults recommends to bring life to thinner hair. “I like this one because it smells great, and tea tree oil is known for safely removing dead skin,” she says. Schults adds that this ingredient in shampoos also “strips chemical buildup from your hair,” and “immediately thickens hair, and can also lead to long-term re-growth.”
Another thing you might notice with your hair over 40 in particular, Abdullah says, is that “your hair is dryer than usual.” With the change in hormones, she adds that “oily scalp will probably be less of a problem. Enter dry tresses.” You don’t want to reach for anything too rich right away, she says, and this shampoo is a great option since a “sulfate-free, moisturizing shampoo might do the trick to put more life and hydration into your hair.” Noted!
