The entire point of a new haircut is to make you feel like the absolute most amazing version of yourself. If your hair is letting you down, it’s time to take action. A few strategic snips here and there — a shorter cut, some layers — can make a major difference in your overall look. Although our goal should never be to be younger than we are today, looking fresh, modern, and ready to take on the world IS a pretty good reason to change up your haircut and style.
Glam Girl Gabi always has the best advice when it comes to makeup and hair and keeping fresh. As far as haircuts go, here is her advice on some of the worst haircuts that can age you and five haircuts that can make you look younger.
Blunt Bob or Blunt Lob
As we age, our hair can shed, become thinner, and lose volume. The blunt bob or lob style has a strong unaltered baseline that hits the shoulder or right above it and can feature bangs — or not. The reason this works well, according to Gabi, is because one line at the base makes the hair look denser and thicker, even if it’s not. Thicker hair is connected to youth, so it makes sense why this cut can help if you want an “instant facelift.”
Mid-Length Cut With Long Layers
If the idea of short hair scares you or you have a weak jawline or another reason you prefer to keep some length, Gabi suggests a mid-length cut with long layers. This cut, especially with face-framing layers, is universally flattering. The length isn’t short enough to widen the face, but it’s also not long enough to drag your face down. Be sure to maintain a relatively dense baseline.
Fringe
Whether you choose to keep your hair short, long, or somewhere in between, cutting a fringe into your style can make the face look smaller and camouflage fine lines on the forehead and by the eyes. But Gabi stresses the importance of having your fringe cut properly — there are a number of ways to cut and style bangs — wispy, curtain, etc. But she recommends not getting a too-short fringe or one that’s too blunt because they can draw a lot of attention to lines and puffiness by the eyes and may not be the most flattering.
Bixie
The bixie is trendy, quick to blow-dry, and can be styled to create a ton of playfulness and texture. If you take the length a little longer, it turns into more of a shag cut, but something shorter can look cool and spunky.
Embracing Your Hair’s Natural Texture
If you have wavy or curly hair and have been straightening it for years and years, try to embrace what nature gave you. Curls and waves (and hair that doesn’t look picture perfect) can actually make you look younger. Texture can widen your face and minimize the appearance of a longer, sagging face. It also looks more carefree and that always translates to more youthful.
You should wear your hair in the cut and style that feels most comfortable for you, at any age. But if you feel your current ‘do could use a lift, try one of these five hair changes for an instantly fresh makeover.
