It’s a terrifying thought that the hair products you use daily could actually be contributing to your hair loss. That’s the last thing we need! Often we’re so careful about the foods we eat or even the products we put on our skin, but we fail to realize that our hair products could be damaging as well.
When it comes to all of your cosmetic products, it’s important to know what ingredients to look out for. Some very common beauty ingredients are actually toxic and can cause a whole slew of problems–from acne to dryness and hair loss.
Hair loss happens as you get older and is also a result of genetics, but using the wrong products can accelerate it. In the world of hair, shampoos, conditioners, and treatments with Sodium lauryl sulfate should be avoided at all costs. SLS is a chemical that works as a detergent. It’s often included in shampoo products because it has emulsifying properties and can help remove dirt and oil from your strands.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is bad for your hair because it’s a harsh chemical. It can also be found in commercial cleaners and degreasers. Not only does it wash away dirt, but it strips your hair of any healthy barrier.
This chemical can cause more minor problems like skin irritation and dryness of the scalp, in addition to hair loss. Livestrong reports “Hair loss can be the result of poor rinsing that leaves SLS deposits in your hair follicles.” When this chemical seeps into your scalp, it can damage the hair follicle which stunts further hair growth.
If you choose to continue using shampoos with Sodium lauryl sulfate it’s crucial that you rinse well so that none of the product is left on your head. But ideally, you should switch to a brand that doesn’t contain SLS at all.
