There are a number of DIY hair treatments that are perfect for those days and nights when you’re hunkering down and engaging in self care. Want to nourish strands with a moisturizing mask treatment? Go for it. Covering gray roots without a stylist? Easy enough.

But this is the one hair treatment you should NEVER try at home, according to experts.

Maybe the ends of your hair are looking a big shaggy. Or perhaps your bangs are so long they no longer qualify as bangs.

What to do? Experts say you CAN give yourself a DIY haircut, BUT exert caution — because, unlike with boxed color, there’s no fast fix after you’ve accidentally chopped off several inches of hair (when you were only planning on giving yourself a trim).

If there’s one type of cut that many people assume is simpler than the rest it’s a bang trim. But it’s as easy to mess up your own fringe as it is to cut layers in your hair.

“Just don’t cut your bangs too short!” Stylist Brad Mondo told Vice. “Start off by cutting them longer than you want to ensure you’re not the next victim of a badly cut fringe.”

Experimenting with color or even a few highlights can also be tempting, and depending on your level of expertise, can lead to a hue that you were not planning on sporting. But unlike with a DIY haircut, it’s easier to cover these hair sins with a color correction. If you are in doubt about your hair cutting skills, it’s better to wait and leave that to the professionals.

Still thinking of giving yourself a chop? There’s a tool that can help.

creaclip

Featured on Shark Tank, the CreaClip is a DIY hair cutting tool that boasts a rotating level that you can adjust to ensure your snips are even. The set comes with two clips — a larger one for layers and haircuts and a smaller one that’s perfect for trimming bangs.

Your best bet may be to wait until you can visit a stylist — but if you’re itching to experiment and cut your own hair, this tool is a huge help.
