One of the most exciting parts of the new year is determining which beauty and style trends will dominate the coming months, and which you can integrate into your own taste for a fresh look heading into 2022. Switching up your hairstyle is almost a right of passage for any new year, and there are a number of effortlessly chic and wearable trends to choose from this year to take your look to the next level and elevate your personal style. To get the lowdown on the hair trends to keep an eye on for 2022, we checked in with Elle Westby, Co-Founder and Hairstylist of Gem House for her take on the looks that will own the streets as we head into January.

Textured Bob with Long Fringe
The bob was undeniably one of the biggest looks of 2021, and not much will change with that in the new year, says Westby. “The bob is a classic–add a ton of texture on the ends and long undone layers and you instantly have a ton of movement,” she says. However, adding fringe to your bob is a great way to completely alter the look, enhancing the texture of your stands for a messier and undone vibe. As for styling, Westby suggests trying out a texturizing spray on wet or dry hair to give your strands that extra oomph without looking played out or flat.

Brighter Blondes
Although social media has declared blonde to be “out,” that is no longer the case for the new year. “Blondes will be brighter in the new year, playing up a bit of warmth to really allow the hair to shine,” explains Wesby. “Did you know that golden hues reflect light more than ashy-cool blondes which absorb it and can appear flatter?” When heading into the salon, Wesby suggests asking your stylist for a look that enhances natural shine and channels “a reflective bright blonde with a soft golden glow.” One last thing to note: your colorist may suggest taking your natural shade lighter to add dimension to your roots, using a balayage to create the desired look.

Beret or Any Cute Hat
If you aren’t feeling particularly inclined to switch up your actual cut, Westby explains that adding accessories will quickly update your look in the new year and can help to take your style to the next level. “We all feel like we want to update our wardrobe after this crazy year and now is the time to revamp your closet by adding a few fun pieces to dress up those strands. Top your head with a cute beret for an impactful yet chill look,” she says. An added bonus? If it’s been a minute since you hit the salon for a root touch up, a beret or any other cute hat is the perfect way to hide the truth.

Opulent Brunettes
As for darker hair, Westby notes that brighter, bolder brunette shades will take the year by storm. “Even our guests who like to keep their hair natural are opting to at least add a rich gloss onto their blow dry or haircut with added tone for a bit of sparkle. When making your next appointment for your haircut or blow dry, add a gloss to your service,” she suggests. Adding a gloss to your hair is a low maintenance way to give your look a subtle boost, and Westby notes that adding a golden gloss can do even more to give your hair the appearance of being touched by the sun. 6-10 weeks is suggested for touch ups.
